FLN Girls 1A Weekly Poll – Week Ending 2/26/23

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in , , , .

Okay, not quite ‘weekly’ since we wait until two weeks are in the books for our first regular season poll!

A bit of a complication to figuring this out was that Vero Beach played a doubleheader yesterday up north and took close games against both Ponte Vedra and Episcopal School, while American Heritage-Delray and Lake Highland were taking on strong 2A opponents, with both showing that they might well be the two best teams currently in the state. Steinbrenner has a date with LHP later in the season to make their case.

Obviously, the amount of games varies in these first two weeks, and there are some undefeated teams with average schedules that will not be seen here until they’ve shown against the tougher part of their schedule, or continue their winning streaks, so don’t worry if you don’t see your name yet, just keep winning and things will work out!

Naples has only played one game and took a rough loss to St. Thomas, just like last year, so we’ll see how they respond, also just like last year.

There has been a tendency among the Girls’ schedules to be a little more ‘traditional’ in playing District games, while the Boys are more likely to schedule according to perceived strength of opponent, but it doesn’t figure into the strength of schedule too much yet.

FLN Girls 1A Top 10

1) Lake Highland (3-0) – very impressive road wins over Vero Beach and St. Thomas. AH-Delray comes to town on Friday

    2) AH-Delray (4-0) – very impressive road wins over Bartram Trail and Ponte Vedra back-to-back

    3) Ponte Vedra (3-2) – one goal loss Saturday to Vero was pretty much the best result of the week below the Top 2

    4) Episcopal School (4-1) – a 2-goal loss to Vero Saturday as VB played them both, and a solid win over Pensacola Catholic. ESJ and PV play Wednesday.

    5) South Fork (3-1) – a 2-goal win at Jupiter and a 2-goal loss at home to Vero is a very solid start to the season for a team in what looks like a loaded District 13; can they keep it up against a strong schedule?

    6) St. Stephen’s Episcopal (1-0) – only one game in the books, so they slipped a few notches. An easier schedule means they have to win while others fall to make a move up.

    7) Pine Crest (3-0) – a one-goal win at Benjamin, and a very tough schedule with 2 big games this week, will give clarity next week.

    8) St. Augustine (5-1) – 5 of 6 have been played at home, and there’s a big slate of tough road games down the line. Only Bartram has beaten them, but the margin in that one is a bit worrisome for when the schedule toughens.

    9) Saint Andrew’s (4-1) – a solid start with nice wins and an expected tough loss to AH-Delray, Pine Crest is on Tuesday in a strong region.

    10) Pensacola Catholic (4-1) – an early season weekend trip showed a competitive loss at Episcopal and a nice win over Oak Hall. Their schedule is a little lighter, but they do get St. Augustine at home, in the middle of a lot of home games. They can’t afford an upset though given who they play later on.

Also Considered: Academy of Holy Names, St. Edward’s and Jensen Beach

Remember, a lot of undefeated teams will reveal who is legit and who just had a fast start against a weaker schedule, so don’t fret!
