FLN Girls Class 1A Weekly Poll – 3/19/23!

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in , , , .

We’re now at the point in the season where there’s enough data to tighten up both polls and power rankings, as we come down to the final three weeks of the season.

Our top teams have been playing national games, and for the most part, I do not weight them too much in my thinking, since few of our high schools get to play top national programs.

Most schools were off last week due to the spring break, so there isn’t going to be much movement.

Here’s last week’s Poll:

FLN Girls 1A Top 10 Poll for the Week Ending 3/12/23

1) American Heritage-Delray (7-1)

2) Lake Highland Prep (7-1)

3) Ponte Vedra (7-2)

4) Episcopal School (6-3)

5) South Fork (7-1)

6) St. Augustine (8-2)

7) St. Stephen’s (6-0)

8) Saint Andrew’s (8-2)

9) Jensen Beach (8-3)

10) Pensacola Catholic (6-2)

Also Considered:

American Heritage-Plantation (7-0), Bishop Moore (3-6), Holy Names (4-1), Community School (4-1), Pine Crest (5-2)

AH-Delray went 3-0 on the week, with an easy win over Benjamin followed by two big road wins over northern powers Bishop Ireton and Our Lady of Good Council, and look forward to the 23rd, when they can cement a Top 25 national ranking with a home game against Stone Ridge (MD), an IL preseason #9 ranked program.

LHP handled Valor Christian (CO) and a continuing to impress Newsome (13-8) to go 2-0. Tuesday they have their showdown with 2A #1 Steinbrenner. After that it’s really only surging Hagerty on April 5th to end the season with a tough test.

Ponte Vedra was off last week, and has a loaded schedule this week, with St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (VA) on Tuesday, with their annual Rivalry on the River game with Bartram Trail on Saturday.

Episcopal’s game with Bartram was postponed. They are scheduled for FOUR games this week, and if the BT game is not rescheduled, they still face a lot of tough games. St. Augustine, SS&SA, at Lake Mary and then the ROTR game with Nease, which looks like the easiest game of the four.

South Fork was off last week and looks like they should handle their two upcoming games with Cardinal Newman and Pine School.

St. Augustine was also off last week and has the Episcopal game tomorrow. It’s the following week when they will face AH-Delray on the road.

St. Stephens’s went 2-0, with easy wins over Bishop Verot and Out-of-Door and has Academy of Holy Names Tuesday among their two games.

St. Andrew’s was off last week and is also off this week.

Jensen Beach was also off last week, and has two solid tests with Pine Crest and at Martin County coming up this week.

Pensacola Catholic was also off last week, and has only their city rival Pensacola on the docket for this week, before a busy last two weeks.

When you look outside the Top 10, there’s still the interesting issue of Bishop Moore, at #6 in Laxnumbers, but still not ranked here. They fell to New England prep school Deerfield Academy, as their only game of the week, and this week faces 3 teams that will not tell us much about the Hornets. The last week of the regular season will tell us everything, so we can keep waiting. I fall between how FHSAA/MP tend to look at records, while Laxnumbers favors Strength of Schedule far more; my opinion is a tough schedule is great, but you have to show a win or two against that schedule to put me in your camp.

For the other schools being considered:

AH-Plantation is this year’s poster child for going undefeated while playing a schedule that doesn’t excite. There’s a little of that with St. Stephen’s too, but their Manatee road win easily trumps anything on the AH-P schedule, where #19 in 1A (Laxnumbers) Barron Collier, is their best win. It will take some wins in the bracket to get Top 10 to me.

They have SJP coming up, and a loss there would be rough.

Pine Crest comes off a 2-0 week and is looking at a trip to Jensen Beach this week to make their case. Holy Names faces St. Stephen’s this week and a loss likely eliminates them from the Poll given their Strength of Schedule.

Community School handled Riverview, but the Bishop Verot score, if played, has not shown up yet. They have a few big tests coming up.

So, when all is said and done, there’s no real movement this week. Pretty remarkable that it’s played out for another 7 days, but Spring Break IS Spring Break . . .

We’ll keep it the same, with the records updated, and await games this week that should change things up!
