The NCAA Rules Committee made recommendations at its meetings in Indianapolis this week — notably some tweaks to the video review and changes to officiating the face-offs.

The changes were far less drastic than some posed this winter at the IMLCA Coaches Convention that drew much discussion.

First are adjustments to the officiating mechanic. The proposal states:

  • After the command of down, the official would stand over the face-off players and could adjust the players’ positions as needed.
  • From there, the official would say “set” and would back out and whistle to start the face-off.
  • This would require the official to get out of the way before the face-off starts.

This combats the “swizzle,” aka an immediate whistle after a set call.

“From the committee’s perspective, this mechanic will provide a natural varied cadence to the whistle,” said Maryland coach John Tillman, the committee chair. “There has been a growing concern about a lack of variance between the ‘set’ and whistle call to start the face-off.”
