Jacksonville Women Earn First Win of 2024 with 18-14 Victory Over Marquette

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Picking up their first win of the season, the Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse team defeated Marquette 18-14 at The Rock Stadium. The Dolphins used outscored MU by five in the second half to clinch the victory.

Lauren Ellis and Brigid Manning led the way offensively, both scoring four goals each with Ellis adding an assist to her totals to lead the team in points. Mackenzie Boyle was a catalyst for a high-powered offense on the day, scoring twice and assisting on two goals on the afternoon.

Maddy Orefice and Kaila Stasuli had multiple goals in the game both scoring twice for the Dolphins. Hailey Blachly picked up three ground balls joining JU goalkeeper Paige Pagano for the team high in that category. Abby Moran led the team in draw controls with eight.

“We battled our way through this win and I am so very proud of our fight,” said head coach Tara Singleton. “It took all of us to find a way and that they did. We had multiple goal scorers and multiple assists, we hope to see more of that this year!”

The Dolphins grabbed the early momentum, scoring three straight goals to end the first quarter to take a 5-2 lead heading into the second quarter. In the second, Marquette began to come alive on both ends, outscoring the Dolphins 5-1 in the second quarter to erase the JU lead and take one of their own, leading 7-6 at the break.

Jacksonville answered the call in the second half scoring six goals in each quarter to retake the lead and extend the advantage. JU closed the door on any comeback attempt in the closing minutes of the game, scoring five of the final six goals in the game, scoring the first of those six with 5:31 remaining in the game and the final dagger with just the tee seconds left.

The Dolphins travel to Gainesville on Wednesday, February 28, for an afternoon match up with the nationally ranked Florida Gators. The game is slated for a 4 pm start time.
