Lynn Men’s Lacrosse Loses in Opener to Newberry

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Newberry outscored Lynn University by two goals in the second quarter that proved to be the difference in a 15-13 loss for the Fighting Knights in men’s lacrosse action, Saturday. Lynn tied the ballgame in the fourth, but couldn’t take the lead as Newberry sealed the win late.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
– Both teams scored four goals in the first and fourth quarters and three in the third, but it was a 4-2 scoring edge for the Wolves in the second that proved to be the advantage
– Lynn outshot Newberry 43-38 and the Fighting Knights finished 17-of-18 clears
– Sophomore Edward Downey, senior Fisher Williams, senior Jalen Stanton and senior Thomas Murray each found the net in the opening quarter for a 4-2 lead with 3:37 to play.
– Newberry scored four of the game’s next five goals to surge to a 6-5 with 5:33 to play in the first half
– Williams scored at 4:11 in the second to tie things at six before the Wolves rattled off four-straight for a 10-6 lead with 11:54 to play in the third
– Stanton scored with 1:01 left in the third and again with 12:05 left in the fourth as both goals pulled the Fighting Knights to within two at 11-9 and 12-10
– Stanton connected on a shot again at 8:06 in the fourth quarter and Williams scored back-to-back goals at 6:10 and 5:40 as the Fighting Knights battled back to tie the game at 13-13
– Newberry captured the win with a goal at 4:11 and another with 2:10 to play
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
– Murray finished with three goals and three assists
– Stanton finished with four goals and two assists
– Williams scored four times
– Graduate student Michael Miocic won 10-of-20 faceoffs
