MLL: 2017 Brine Goalie of the Year Nominees Announced – Kaut Not Nominated (Really?)

Author’s Note:  at least we can congratulate JU Head Coach John Galloway on his nomination but Austin Kaut’s lack of a nomination is puzzling to say the least . . . easily led the league in Saves and basically tied with Kyle Bernlohr for Save%, which Kaut did over 14 games while Bernlohr played 10 games.  I suspect the League will regret that one next year as Austin took quite the leap up this year and will only use this as even more motivation for next season.

Here are the nominees for the 2017 Brine Goalie of the Year:
Jack Kelly, Goalie, Denver Outlaws
In his second pro season, Kelly led MLL goalies in wins (9) while ranking third in save percentage (.548) and fourth in goals against average (11.82). Kelly was named the Warrior Defensive Player of the Week in Week 4 and Week 14 and he limited opponents to single-digit goals in three straight games from Apr. 29-May 13. The former Brown Bear made national headlines during the Fourth of July game against Atlanta when he scored a full-field goal, the first goal of his pro career.
Kyle Bernlohr, Goalie, Ohio Machine
Bernlohr led all goalies in save percentage (.567) and posted the lowest goals against average among goalies with at least six games played (11.35). He was named the Warrior Defensive Player of the Week for Week 6 after stopping 14 of 21 shots against the Launch in the first start of his pro career. Bernlohr is the highest drafted goalie ever from the University of Maryland (No. 11, 2016) and is the first former Terps goalie to lead the league in save percentage.
John Galloway, Goalie, Rochester Rattlers
Galloway was one of three goalies with at least eight wins this season and he ranked third in the league with an 11.57 goals against average and fourth in save percentage (.541). He earned Warrior Defensive Player of the Week in Week 3 with a 16-save performance at Ohio and made a season-high 23 saves in the Rattlers’ must-win game against the Machine in Week 15. Since the start of the 2016 season, his 16 wins are the most by any goalie in the league in that time.
