#2 Spartans Secure First NCAA Tournament Win in Program History

TAMPA, FL. – The No.2 University of Tampa women’s lacrosse team wins their first NCAA Tournament game in program history and advance to the next round.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Records: Tampa (18-2), Rollins (15-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

First Quarter: The game opened with Rollins winning the first draw control of the game going into setting up their offense. This quickly turned into a goal for Rollins as they put the first points on the board. Tampa’s first offensive possession didn’t result in anything, but they were eager to make it up on defense playing strong on the defensive end. Alex Walling contributed to this with a save preventing Rollins from getting on the board again too early. Although Rollins scored on a separate possession, Tampa finally found the back of the net with a goal from Riley McGettigan. The goals for the Spartans were scored as follows:

2:55 – Riley McGettigan, assisted by Lizzie Pierpont

Score: 1-2 (Rollins)

Second Quarter: The second quarter opened with another good defensive stunt from Tampa draining Rollins shot clock. Tampa came back with a goal from Sophi Wrisk to tie the game at two. From here, both teams exchanged scores tying the game at four. After a goal from Julia Kolderman, Tampa takes their first lead of the afternoon. They kept the ball rolling forcing Rollins to take a timeout and going up by three to finish the second quarter. The Spartan goals headed into halftime were scored as follows:

9:19 – Sarah Hinkle, assisted by Cece Colombo

6:50 – Emma McLoughlin, unassisted

3:54 – Julia Kolderman, unassisted

3:14 – Lizzie Pierpont, assisted by Julia Kolderman

0:29 – Riley McGettigan, unassisted

Score: 8-5 (Tampa)

Third Quarter: The third quarter started with Tampa winning the draw control. This turned into a goal for Sarah Hinkle extending Tampa’s lead. Rollins comes back scoring, cutting down Tampa’s lead to three again. They then cut the deficit to two with 6:00 left. Rollins kept pushing scoring again putting themselves within one with 3:30 left. Tampa’s lead was in jeopardy but they weren’t giving up fighting until the end with a goal from Allie Peebles. Another goal from Kolderman closes out the third for Tampa keeping them on top. The Spartans goals were scored as follows:

Fourth Quarter: The last quarter started with Rollins getting on the board quickly putting the score at 13-11. Back to back saves from Walling stops Rollins momentum for a little bit. Rollins then scores back to back goals tying the game at 13 with 5:06 left. Cece Colombo was all over the field on the offensive end fighting for each possession after deflecting a pass from Rollins goalie which lead to a goal from KoldermanColombo scooped up the last draw control of the game to secure the win for the Spartans helping them advance to the next round in the NCAA Tournament. The Spartan goals for the fourth quarter were scored as follows:

3:35 – Julia Kolderman, unassisted

0:24 – Dani Waters, unassisted

Final: 15-13 (Tampa)

Rollins Drops NCAA Tournament Opener at Tampa

The Tars wrap up the season with a 15-4 record

TAMPA, Fla. (May 12, 2023) – The ninth-ranked and fourth-seeded Rollins women’s lacrosse team saw its season come to an end on Friday with a 15-13 defeat at Tampa, the No. 2-ranked team in the country and the top seed in South Region. The Tars end the season with a 15-4 record, while the Spartans improve to 18-2.

Caroline Bailey led all players with a career-high five goals, while Caroline Gastonguay tallied five points on two goals and three assists. Molly Mendes added three goals and a pair of draw controls and Claire Reist chipped in with a goal, an assist, two caused turnovers, and a draw control. Courtney Martin and Isabella Cecchi each picked up a team-high three draw controls, with Martin also causing a pair of turnovers. Claire Barber (7-4) took the loss, making 10 saves on 25 shots faced. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

  • The Tars got off to a quick start, with Caroline Gastonguay opening the scoring just over a minute into the contest.
  • Bailey got her first of the game about 10 minutes later to make it 2-0 Tars, but Tampa notched its first goal just over a minute after that, making it a 2-1 game after one quarter.

Second Quarter

  • Both offenses picked it up in the second quarter, as 10 goals were scored in the period.
  • After Tampa scored first to tie it at two, Charlotte Gastonguay put Rollins back in front, 3-2, at the 10:03 mark.
  • The Spartans again tied it, but Mendes netted a free-position goal to make it 4-3 Tars with 8:41 on the clock.
  • Tampa then found some momentum, scoring four straight goals to go up 7-4 before Charlotte Gastonguay stemmed the tide with her second of the game at the 1:15 mark.
  • The Spartans were able to get a late goal before the break, going up 8-5 at halftime.

Third Quarter

  • UT continued to extend its lead early in the second half, scoring twice in the first 2:03 of the third quarter to push the margin to 10-5.
  • Caroline Gastonguay and Mendes scored the next two markers, cutting the deficit to 10-7 with 9:09 to play in the third.
  • After another Tampa goal, Rollins rattled off three straight, getting goals from Bailey, Mendes, and Reist, to pull within one at 11-10 with 3:30 left in the quarter.
  • Tampa responded with a pair of late goals to build its lead back to three at 13-10 heading to the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter

  • Rollins really clamped down defensively in the final period, keeping Tampa off the scoreboard for over 10 minutes.
  • Bailey scored her third goal of the game 1:22 into the quarter to make it 13-11, from which point neither team was able to find the net for over seven minutes.
  • It was Bailey once again at the 6:06 mark to make it 13-12, and exactly one minute later, she netted her fifth goal of the game to level the score at 13-13 with just over five minutes to go.
  • The Spartans answered back with a goal at the 3:35 mark, and although the Tars won the ensuing draw control, Tampa was able to force a turnover to prevent Rollins from getting into its offense.
  • Barber came up with a huge save at the 1:18 mark to keep Rollins in it, but after Tampa corralled the rebound, the Spartans were able to run the clock down and score an empty-netter as the Tars employed the 10-man ride in an attempt to force a turnover, and Tampa would escape with a 15-13 victory.
