Page, Ryan Anchor SJU to Win Player, Rookie Awards; Stalwart Saunders Gains Defensive Honor

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Saint Joseph’s junior Carter Page as its Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week. Richmond graduate student Jake Saunders was named Defensive Player of the Week. SJU freshman Shayne Ryan was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played March 20-26.

Page scored a career-best six goals in the defeat at home to No. 4 Duke. The attacker from Peterborough, Ontario, accounted for 66.7 percent of the scoring against the Blue Devils. He entered the game tied for the nation’s seventh longest goal-scoring streak, which he extended to 20 straight games versus the Blue Devils.

Saunders picked up four ground balls and recorded a season and career-high five caused turnovers in a win over St. John’s. A defender from Oakville, Ontario, Saunders anchored a defense that allowed the Red Storm just eight goals.

Ryan made his first collegiate start after recording his first appearance last week. He produced 13 saves with a .520 save percentage against No. 4 Duke. A sophomore from Gainesville, Fla., he helped hold one of the nation’s most prolific scoring teams nearly four goals below their average while also adding a pair of ground balls.
