PBA Men: Sailfish Comeback Comes Up Short Against #20 CMU

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla- The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s lacrosse team had their win-streak snapped by No. 20 Colorado Mesa 14-10. PBA (4-3) made a deep comeback in the second half that didn’t come to fruition. Austin Evans and Henry Sloyan led the Sailfish with hat-tricks. 

After a 90-minute lightning delay, the Mavericks opened the game up on a 2-0 run and scored four total goals in the first quarter. The lone goal scorer in the first quarter for PBA was Austin Evans. Evans dodged from behind the goal and buried a shot for PBA’s first goal of the game with 7:48 left in the first quarter. Evans tacked on another goal before the first quarter ended to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The only Sailfish to score in the second quarter was Henry Sloyan. Down 5-2 With 12:26 in the second quarter Ben Justice notched his fourth assist of the year when he connected with  Sloyan. CMU went on a 4-0 run in the second quarter to extend its lead to 9-3. With 53 seconds left in the first half, Evans found a cutting Sloyan near the net. Sloyan ripped his second goal of the game to bring the score to 9-4. Sloyan leads the team in points with 18 and goals with 13.

Down 9-4 at halftime, the Sailfish shot out of a cannon in the third quarter and outscored the Mavericks 4-1 in the period. At 12:59,  Hunter Hopman scored his 12th goal of the season to cut into CMU’s lead. With 11:20 left in the third quarter PBA capitalized on a Mavericks penalty when Caleb Southard aired the ball to Dylan Insolia. Insolia fired his shot in the back of the net to bring the score to 9-6. Southard leads the team in assists with seven. CMU answered back with 10:44 left in the third quarter to bring the score to 10-6. Evans and Sloyan closed out the third quarter with unassisted goals of their own to cut the deficit to 10-8 entering the fourth quarter. 

CMU opened the fourth quarter on a 2-0 run to bring the score to 12-8. With 11:14 left in the game, Zach Holmes earned his second assist of the season when he found Insolia. Insolia cranked a shot to cut CMU’s lead to three. Insolia finished the game with two goals. 

The last goal of the game for the ‘Fish came from Southard. With 5:59 left in the fourth, Southard dodged from behind the net and dove goal line extended. His ninth goal of the year cut the Maverick lead to 12-10. With just under six minutes to play the Mavericks finished the game on a 2-0 run to put the ‘Fish away. 

CMU outshot the PBA 45-38. The ‘Fish went 12/28 on faceoffs and committed four penalties. Ben Lightsey started in net and recorded 16 saves. Gunner Gebelein finished the game with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Teagan Hersh scooped up two grand balls with two caused turnovers. Aaron Miechiels had three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Dylan Hunt made his presence felt with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
