Rollins Women: Big Third Quarter Leads Rollins Over Golden Bears

The Tars remained undefeated with a strong second half effort in a 14-6 victory over Concordia-St. Paul

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 10, 2022) – The Tars remained undefeated with a strong second half effort in a 14-6 victory over Concordia-St. Paul.  Rollins improves to 5-0 overall, while the Golden Bears drop to 4-5, as they end their three game Florida trip.

Caroline Gastonguay scored four goals and tallied three assists for a game high seven points.  Paige Kienle netted a hat trick.  Liz Fahey played the role of distributor, collecting four assists.  Bridget Cawley starred for the defense, causing four turnovers and picking up four groundballs. Behind her, Rachel Schlesinger made six saves.

Delaney Davidson led the Golden Bears with three goals and an assist, good for four points.  Three other Concordia players scored once each.  Candace McDole made seven saves in between the pipes.

The Tars owned the possession battle, winning 14 draw controls against the Golden Bears’ 10.  Rollins also cleared on 18-22 chances, while Concordia-St. Paul only managed 14-20.  This led the Tars to a 27-17 shooting advantage.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

  • Taylor Kienle scored right off the first draw to give the Tars a quick lead.
  • The Golden Bear responded with two goals, as Rollins fell behind 2-1.
  • Concordia-St. Paul held their lead for over seven minutes, as both defenses locked down.  Rollins finally got the equalizer with under four minutes in quarter when Abigail Cawley scored an extra woman goal off an assist from Caroline Gastonguay.

Second Quarter

  • Rollins reclaimed the lead when Gastonguay and Abigail Cawley reconnected for another score.
  • Concordia-St. Paul would pull level at 3-3 just one minute later.
  • Caroline Gastonguay scored her first goal off an assist from Liz Fahey to give the Tars the lead for good.
  • Caroline Gastonguay then found Paige Kienle, as Rollins capitalized on a second Golden Bear penalty to make the score 5-3.

Third Quarter

  • The Tars opened the second half on a five goal run, putting the game out of reach.
  • Paige Kienle opened the scoring off an assist from Fahey.  Caroline Gastonguay then scored her second, before Fahey found Paige Kienle again, allowing the senior to complete her hat trick.
  • Caroline Gastonguay tallied her third to make the score 9-3.
  • Lauren Noonan handled a pass from Fahey on the crease and beat the goalie for her first goal of the season.
  • The two teams traded goals over the final seven minutes of the quarter, with Ashley Goldstein and Caroline Gastonguay scoring for Rollins. The two teams entered the final frame with the scoreboard showing 12-5.

Fourth Quarter

  • The Tars defense clamped down as a pair of Rollins’ scores bookended a single Concordia St. Paul goal.
  • Ali Rogers netted her first goal of the game at the nine minute mark, and Charlotte Gastonguay tallied her first score inside the final minute.

The Tars will host Alabama Huntsville on Sunday, March 13.  First draw against the Chargers is set for 1 p.m.
