Spartans Long Unbeaten Run Comes to an End

BOYD, Md. – The No.1 ranked University of Tampa Spartans men’s lacrosse team drops their first match of the season.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

FIRST QUARTER

The first quarter would open with a goalie dual, with both teams recording shots on goal testing each net-minder. The Bobcats opened the scoring three minutes into the matchup, before the Spartans answered with Grant Green in the sixth minute. Less than one minute later, Harry Kilkowski found Daniel Fitzpatrick in front of the net to put Tampa in the lead. The Bobcats took the lead once again about halfway through the quarter, and netted a late goal to put them up by two. Kilkowski found the back of the net again with just over two minutes left to cut the Bobcats’ lead to one. The Bobcats netted a couple last minute goals to put them up by three headed into the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

The second quarter would begin with the Bobcats scoring early, building their lead to four goals. Canyon Birch netted the Spartans’ first goal of the second 15 minutes, followed by Fitzpatrick to get Tampa closer to the Bobcats’ lead. A surge of late goals by the Bobcats put them in the lead by three goals headed into the half.

THIRD QUARTER

The second half would begin slower than the other two, with each teams defense playing well. With just under 12 minutes left in the quarter, the Spartans had the man-advantage on a power play. The Bobcats built their lead to four goals with just under nine minutes left in the quarter. Fitzpatrick found the back of the net for the Spartans to cut the Bobcats’ lead to three goals, igniting the Spartan offense. The Spartans would head into the final 15 minutes trailing by four goals.

FOURTH QUARTER

The final 15 minutes began with Kilkowski continuing his stellar performance netting his second goal of the matchup. The Bobcats built their lead back to four with just over seven minutes left in the match. Veteran long-stick midfielder Matthew Beddow found Canyon Birch in front of the net with just under five minutes left, to put the Spartans within three of the lead.
