No.1 Spartans Win Close Matchup Against No.16 Florida Tech to Host SSC Finals

TAMPA, FL. – The No. 1 ranked University of Tampa Spartans men’s lacrosse team defeats No.16 Florida Tech to Host the SSC Finals on Sunday

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Records: Tampa Spartans (17-0) (8-0 SSC), Florida Tech Panthers (10-6) (5-3 SSC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

FIRST QUARTER

The Spartans would open the game with Harry Kilkowski netting the first goal of the contest just four minutes into the quarter. The Panthers answered, scoring three unanswered goals, causing the Spartans to reevaluate their game plan. The two evenly matched, conference foes battled it out in the opening minutes, but the Panthers would find the back of the net four times. With a late goal by Luke McAnaney, the Spartans cut into the Panthers’ lead headed into the second quarter. The Spartans scored as follows:

00:06 – Luke McAaney, assisted by Daniel Fitzpatrick

Score: 4-2 Florida Tech

SECOND QUARTER

The second quarter began similarly to the first, with both teams battling in this post season matchup. The Panther opened the scoring for the quarter, but Cole Willard had an answer of his own. The Panthers continued to give the Spartans a run for their money before the half. Colin White netted his first of the game with one second left in the quarter to keep the Spartans in the game. The Spartans scored as follows:

11:10 – Daniel Fitzpatrick, unassisted

01:01 – Colin White, assisted by Harry Kilkowski

Score: 7-5 Florida Tech

THIRD QUARTER

The Spartans had some ground to make up after the first half. After Owen Miller opened the scoring, the Spartan offense came to life. White netted his second of the game after connecting with Kilkowski and sparked the surge of Tampa goals. The Panthers would be held to only two goals in this quarter, due to the outstanding Spartan defense. FitzpatrickWhite, and McAnaney each netted more second goals in the second half to put the Spartans in the lead. Behind Miller‘s second goal with six seconds left in the third, the Spartans excellent play in the quarter would earn them the lead headed into the final 15 minutes. The Spartans scored as follows:

FOURTH QUARTER
The Spartans carried over their momentum from the third quarter with McAnaney finishing off his hat trick one minute into the quarter. Both Fitzpatrick and White also finished off their hat tricks to cap off the game. The Spartans resilience and hard work punched their ticket to the SSC Finals. The Spartans scored as follows:

13:09 – Daniel Fitzpatrick, assisted by Colin White

09:43 – Colin White, assisted by Harry Kilkowski

Score: 15-9 Tampa

Panthers Fall to No. 1 Tampa in SSC Semifinals

Records: Florida Tech (10-6, 5-2 SSC), Tampa (17-0, 7-0 SSC)
Location: Naimoli Family Stadium | Tampa, Fla.

FIRST QUARTER:

  • Tampa got on the board first to go up 1-0 with 11:36 left in the first but the Panthers scored four unanswered goals to grab a 4-1 lead with less than a minute remaining in the opening quarter. 
  • Collin Stewart tallied the first two goals for Tech, the second coming off an assist from Zach Rozgonyi with 8:57 to go.
  • Bennett Duffy found the back of the net off an assist from Griffin Bowie with 4:46 left to make the score 3-1. 
  • Rozgonyi then pushed the lead to 4-1 with his first of the night with 59 seconds to go. 
  • A late goal by the Spartans with 6 seconds left on the clock trimmed the margin to 4-2. 

SECOND QUARTER:

  • Consecutive goals by Rozgonyi increased Tech’s lead to 6-3 with 11:51 to go in the first half. 
  • Jakob Terpak netted a behind the back goal off an assist from Matt Gutmann to give the Panthers a 7-4 advantage with 9:32 remaining in the half. 
  • Tampa scored with 1:01 left in the second quarter and Tech carried a 7-5 lead into halftime. 

THIRD QUARTER: 

  • Spartans outscored the Panthers 7-2 in the third quarter to take a 12-9 lead into the fourth. 
  • Chandler Hake accounted for a man-up goal during the third, scoring off an assist from Rozgonyi with 11:03 left to hand Tech an 8-7 lead. 
  • Duffy then scored later in the quarter to tie the contest at 9-9 with 4:05 to go. 

FOURTH QUARTER:

  • Tampa added three more goals in the fourth and walked away with a 15-9 win to advance to Sunday’s SSC Final.

  • Tampa ended with an edge in shots (47-40), faceoffs (19-8) and ground balls (31-28). 
  • Panthers went 20-25 on clears while Tampa was 20-22.

No. 1 Tampa Upends No. 16 Florida Tech in SSC Semifinal

The top-ranked Tampa Spartans used a dominant second half to beat the 16th-ranked Florida Tech Panthers 15-9 in the Sunshine State Conference men’s lacrosse semifinal on Thursday night at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex in Tampa.

The game turned in the second half with the Spartans outsourcing the Panthers 10-2 in the final thirty minutes.

Florida Tech’s leading scorer and single-season goals record holder Zach Rozgonyi had a hat trick to go along with two assists, leading the way for the Panthers. Collin Stewart scored the first two goals of the night for the visitors and Bennett Duffy ended the night with two goals. Chandler Hake and Jakob Terpak had one goal each.
