No. 16 Tampa Pulls Off Upset on the Road Over No. 6 Rollins in Dominant Fashion

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The No.16 ranked University of Tampa Spartans women’s lacrosse team upsets the No.6 Rollins College Tars on the road in dominant fashion.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

First Quarter

Tampa would win the draw to open the game and a goal would soon follow with Georgia Glowaki kicking off the scoring just thirty seconds into the game. Much of the first quarter would be spent with each team battling back and forth. After scoring the first goal of the game the Spartans would trail but goals from both Colombo and Hinkle would put them back on top.

Second Quarter

The second quarter was full of scoring with Tampa starting off in total control. Lizzie Pierpont would find the back of the net twice to put the Spartans back on top by a goal. At one point, Tampa found themselves with a four-goal advantage. However, the Tars would fight back scoring four unanswered goals.

Third Quarter

Tampa dominated the third quarter from start to finish. Pierpont opened the scoring with her third goal of the game followed by Christina Romano who would score her first goal of the game. The Spartan defense would shoutout the Tars and Tampa would end the quarter with a five-goal lead.

Fourth Quarter

Tampa continued to apply pressure and frustrate the Tars much like the previous two quarters. Hinkle scored her fourth and fifth goals of the game in the fourth quarter while Olivia Mott was able to add her third assist of the day. With very good attacking and defensive play, the Spartans pull off the upset over Rollins college.

  • With Cece Colombo‘s seven draw controls on the day, she was able to pick up and surpass 100 draw controls for her career
  • Dani Watersis one caused turnover away from tying the single season record which is currently held by Alexa Scudillo
  • Tampa finished the game with 28 shots on goal

Spartans Spoil Rollins Senior Day

Rollins could not keep up with the No. 16 Tampa Spartans over the second half, as a 9-9 game turned into an 18-10 Rollins loss over the final 30 minutes

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 16, 2022) – Rollins could not keep up with the No. 16 Tampa Spartans over the second half, as a 9-9 game turned into an 18-10 Rollins loss over the final 30 minutes.  The No. 6 Tars fall to 12-2 overall, and 3-2 in Sunshine State Conference play.  Tampa improves to 8-6 overall, and 4-1 in conference action.
 
Caroline Gastonguay led Rollins, recording a hat trick, and dishing out a pair of assists, good for a team high five points.  Taylor Kienle and Liz Fahey each tallied a pair for Rollins, with Fahey adding an assist to give her three total points.  Taylor Kienle and Whitney MacMillan each collected four draw controls.  Rachel Schlesinger played 54 minutes in goal for Rollins, making 10 saves.  Claire Barber played six minutes in cage in relief.
 
Sarah Hinkle tallied a game high, five goals, to lead the Spartan attack.  Lizzie Pierpont netted four for Tampa.  Olivia Mott dished out a pair of assists.  Alex Walling started in net for Tampa, making a pair of stops in first half action.  She was spelled by Kyli Warnkin, who made five stops, while only allowing a lone goal in 30 minutes of play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

  • The Spartans got the games first goal, but the Tars would claim their first lead just minutes later after back-to-back goals from Taylor Kienle.
  • Tampa would grab a 3-2 lead with a pair of scores of their own, but again Rollins responded with back-to-back unassisted goals from Caroline Gastonguay to make the score 4-3 after one quarter.

Second Quarter

  • The Spartans would pull back in front with two goals to open the period.
  • Caroline Gastonguay found Liz Fahey for the Tars first goal of the second quarter, to even the tally at 5-5.
  • Tampa would grab control with four consecutive scores, leaving the Tars down 9-5 with ljust three miuntes before halftime.
  • Rollins would not go quietly, and rallied off a four goal steak of their own, in just over 2:30 minutes of game time.  Abigail DeGroatAbigail CawleyClaire Reist, and Liz Fahey accounted for the scoring.

Third Quarter

  • Tampa opened the game up with a nine goal run that started with five unanswered goals in the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter

  • The Spartans completed the run with four goals to open the third quarter.
  • The Tars finally broke the streak when Caroline Gastonguay found Fahey for a late score, but it was too late for a Rollins comeback.
