BOX SCORE

DeLand, Fla. — Dating back to last season, the Stetson University lacrosse team had lost six straight contests but on Sunday afternoon, the Hatters ended that streak with a 15-13 win over Winthrop University at the ATC.

The Hatters (1-2) got out to a 1-0 lead after a goal from Samantha Paglino at the 12:34 mark, but the Eagles responded with a goal of their own almost a minute later to knot to the score at 1-1. Later in the quarter, Winthrop took a 4-2 lead after a man-up goal, but the Hatters scored twice in a row before the end of the first to tie the game at 4 apiece. Then in the second, the Hatters offense went on a 4-1 run, highlighted by Paglino’s second goal of the game, and took an 8-4 lead into the break.

Out of the break, the Eagles (0-3) knotted the game at 9-9 by the 5:46 mark in the third quarter. Stetson immediately responded as Paglino scored her third goal of the contest to take back the lead at 10-9. With a 1:30 left in the third, the Eagles and Hatters combined for four goals as Paglino scored her fourth of the contest. In the fourth, Stetson and Winthrop went back-and-forth and after Winthrop’s Olivia Dworakowski knotted the game at 13-13 with 9:48 left, the Stetson defense kept the Eagles off the board for the remainder of the contest, then Jacklyn Lavoie and Saige Roe sealed the win as the pair scored the Hatters’ 14th and 15th goals of the game.

Roe, Jessica Duggan, and Jordyn Humphrey all scored twice for the Hatters in the win. Stetson goalkeeper Kiera McCarthy recorded her first win of the year as the graduate student tallied five saves on the day.

The Stetson lacrosse team will be back in action Wednesday, March 2 as the Hatters travel to Clinton, S.C. to take on Presbyterian College for their first road game of the year. The opening face-off is set for noon.
