UF Gators win Seventh-straight with win over Old Dominion

Florida had 14 goal scorers on the afternoon

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Florida lacrosse team toppled the Old Dominion Monarchs 22-6 on Saturday afternoon at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.

The Gators move to 9-4 on the season, 2-0 in the AAC and are winners of seven-straight games, while Old Dominion falls to 5-9 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Florida had 14 goal scorers on the afternoon, led by four from freshman Emma LoPintoEmily HellerAshley GonzalezMadison RiellySarah Mackey and Paisley Eagan each found the back of the cage twice for the Gators.

Eight different players tallied one goal apiece in the victory: Janine SurisDanielle PavinelliBrie CattsMaggie CorboKylee HubiakWhitney AlbertKaala Puglisi and Kelly Schluederberg.

Pavinelli and Suris each dished out a team-leading two assists on the day, while Catts, Gonzalez, Heller, LoPinto, Rielly and Macy Zaban each recorded one helper in the victory.

Florida won 17 draw controls led by a combined eight from Liz Harrison (5) and Heller (3).

The Gator defense was stellar on Saturday afternoon, keeping Old Dominion to a .313 shooting percentage on the day (6-of-15). Florida tallied 12 caused turnovers, led by a team-high two from Emma Wightman.

Leigh Lingo, Heller, Catherine FlahertyMaeson Tydings, Catts, Rielly, Alexa WatersCeleste ForteJill Quigley and Suris each recorded one caused turnover in the victory.

Bella Palagonia and Tydings both registered a team-high two groundballs on the day.

In the cage, Sarah Reznick and Julia Hammerschlag split halves. Reznick tallied two saves with a .500 clip, while only allowing two goals on the afternoon, while Hammerschlag notched one save in the victory.

How it Happened

  • Florida got out to the early 2-0 lead against the Monarchs with Emily Heller and Emma LoPinto each finding the back of the cage within the first 90 seconds of the game.
  • Old Dominion got one back on a free position conversion, but then the Gators strung together an 11-goal run to open up a 13-1 lead over the Monarchs.
  • The first goal of the run came from the stick of Danielle Pavinelli on a pass from Ashley Gonzalez, while Paisley Eagan added a free-position goal of her own to put Florida up 4-1 with just over 10 minutes left in the first quarter.
  • Heller and Eagan each netted their second of the day to keep the scoring going, giving Florida the five-goal advantage.
  • The Gators pulled ahead seven goals by the end of the first quarter, with LoPinto and Gonzalez finding the back of the cage.
  • To start the second quarter, Janine Suris tallied her second goal of the season just under a minute in, followed by an unassisted Kelly Schluederberg score to put the Gators up 10-1. Florida secured the running clock on a goal from Gonzalez with 9:55 remaining in the first half.
  • LoPinto then went back-to-back on assists from Heller and Pavinelli to put Florida up 13-1. That assist was Pavinelli’s 100th career point, making her the 19th Gator to hit that mark.
  • The Florida defense held ODU scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the second quarter, but the Monarchs were able to break through with exactly 3:00 left in the half to pull within 11 goals.
  • The Gators scored the final goal of the frame from the stick of Kaala Puglisi to give Florida the 12-goal lead and the momentum heading into the locker room.
  • Florida scored five-straight goals to start the second half, while holding the Monarchs scoreless for almost the entirety of the third quarter.
  • The five-goal stretch was led off by Brie Catts, followed by Kylee Hubiak’s first score of the day with 11:13 left in the third frame.
  • Sarah Mackey then netted back-to-back goals of her own, putting Florida up 18-2. Madison Rielly followed with a free-position conversion, putting Florida up 17 goals with 2:25 left in the third. Old Dominion cut the deficit by one with 13 seconds to play in the quarter, but the Gators held on to their 16-goal lead.
  • The Gators and the Monarchs were tied 3-3 in the fourth quarter, with Florida’s goals coming from the sticks of Maggie CorboWhitney Albert and Rielly. That was enough to secure the 22-6 victory, Florida’s second-highest scoring output of the season.
