Webber: #7 Men’s Lacrosse Comes up Short Against #9 TWU

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 26, 2022) – The Webber International University men’s lacrosse team hosted the No. 9 Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs, Saturday afternoon on the Warrior Turf Field. In the end, the Warriors comeback effort would fall just short in a 10-9 defeat.

It was a tightly contested game as both the Warriors (10-4 overall, 2-3 AAC) and Bulldogs (10-1, 3-0) had an equal number of shots in the game with 37 apiece. Webber forced its opposition into a total of 19 turnovers, however, TWU would have the advantage from the spot, winning 13 of the 22 total face offs.

The first goal of the game would be scored by the Warriors, roughly three minutes in after a pass from Austin Schepers would find Alexander Kew for the opening score. Just over two minutes later, Webber would double its lead after a goal from Houston Finlayson, assisted by Dave Becker. The Bulldogs would score their first of the game before a solo goal from Becker would make it 3-1 in favor of the Warriors. With 13 seconds remaining in the quarter, TWU would score again to pull back within one heading into the second quarter. The Bulldogs would take control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Warriors 4-1. The only goal of the quarter for Webber would come from Blake Nelson, assisted by Kew, as TWU would hold a 6-4 lead at halftime.

There would be just two goals scored in the third quarter, one from each side, as another goal from Nelson would make it a two-goal game yet again at 7-5. The Bulldogs would score three goals in the final quarter, all of which would be responded by with a goal from the Warriors. Two man-up goals from Finlayson would earn him his third hat-trick of the season and a goal from Alex West with 1:24 remaining in the quarter would make it a two-goal game before another man-up goal, this time from Nelson, would bring the Warriors within one with 14 seconds remaining. However, TWU would win the face off and run out the clock to seal its victory.

Finlayson and Nelson would both lead the Warriors offensively with three goals each while Becker would finish with one goal and two assists for a total of three points. Kew would follow behind with one goal and one assist. Schepers and Connor Herring would lead the team in ground balls with four each followed by Finlayson with three. Jordan Elam and Cade Bullard would both lead the team in caused turnovers with two each while Elam split time with Joshua Cargile on face off duty. Elam would be 2-for-9 from the spot while Cargile ended 7-for-13. Ayden Kulick would pick up 9 saves in his 53 minutes in the cage. The other seven minutes would come from Ryan Prylinksi who tallied two saves.

Next up, the Warriors will host SCAD-Savannah in another conference matchup on Saturday, April 2, at 3 p.m.
