Florida scores 21 goals to earn its fourth-straight victory

TEMPE, Ariz. – The 11th-ranked Florida lacrosse team toppled the Arizona State Sun Devils 21-10 on Sunday afternoon at the Arizona State Soccer Stadium.

The Gators improve to 6-4 on the year and are winners of four-straight, while Arizona State drops to 4-5 during the 2022 campaign.

Florida’s offensive was stellar on Sunday afternoon, led by a career-high seven goals from Danielle Pavinelli.

In total, the Gators had nine goal scorers – Ashley Gonzalez tallied a career-high four goals, followed by three from Paisley Eagan and two from Maggi Hall. Emily Heller, Emma LoPinto, Jill Quigley, Maggie Corbo and Kelly Schluederberg each found the back of the cage once.

Eagan recorded a team-high four assists on the afternoon, setting a new career-high, while LoPinto followed with three helpers of her own. Janine Suris, Hall, Heller, Gonzalez and Quigley each dished out one assist in the victory.

Florida won 14 draw controls, led by four from Shelton Sawers and three from Liz Harrison.

The Gator defense held Arizona State to 10-of-21 shooting and as a team, Florida caused nine turnovers, led by three from Emma Wightman.

In the cage, Sarah Reznick posted four saves with a .400 save percentage against the Sun Devils. Julia Hammerschlag also recorded a save during her 13+ minutes of play.

The Gators return to action on Wednesday, facing the Mercer Bears in Macon, Ga. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m.

How it Happened

  • Just 47 seconds into the game, Emily Heller found Danielle Pavinelli, who squared up to the cage for her 31st goal of the season. Ashley Gonzalez followed Pavinelli’s score, finding the back of the net with the helper from Emma LoPinto.
  • LoPinto scored her first the day after dodging her defender behind the cage, putting Florida up 3-0 with 8:44 to play in the first quarter.
  • Emily Heller shot a rocket at the cage to put herself in the scoring column, tallying her 13th goal of the year.
  • Arizona State got one on the board with just over three minutes remaining, but Pavinelli netted back-to-back goals to put the Gators up 6-1. That was her seventh hat trick in the 2022 campaign.
  • The Sun Devils pulled to within four right after Pavinelli’s last score, but Florida scored on a last-second goal from Hall on a quick pass from Eagan to take the 7-2 lead into the second quarter.
  • Florida continued its strong offensive attack, with Eagan finding the back of the cage just two minutes in to the second frame to put Florida ahead six goals.
  • Pavinelli was a force on the offensive end, scoring her fourth and fifth goals of the game on dishes from LoPinto and Hall, respectively, to put Florida up 10-2 with 11:19 left in the half.
  • After an ASU score, Jill Quigley netted her second goal of the season while falling away, giving UF the 11-3 lead. The Sun Devils cut that lead back to seven just 19 seconds later but the duo of Gonzalez-LoPinto connected on a fast-break opportunity to give Gonzalez her 10th goal of the season and put Florida up 12-4.
  • With 3:59 left in the first half, Pavinelli found the back of the cage for the sixth time, tying her career-high (set against North Carolina earlier this season).
  • Gonzalez got back in the scoring column with 2:30 left in the half, putting Florida up 10 and giving the Gators running clock to close out the first half.  
  • Coming out of the halftime break, Gonzalez found the back of the cage for the fourth time, setting a new career-high to put the Gators up 15-4.
  • The Sun Devils got one back, but Florida’s 10-goal lead kept the running clock going in the third frame.
  • Hall dodged three defenders en route to her second goal of the day, putting Florida up 16-5 with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Florida kept it rolling, with the team scoring after some terrific ball movement, eventually leading to Gonzalez finding Eagan to give the Gators the 12-goal advantage.
  • Arizona State found the back of the cage for the second time in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 11, but with just 22 seconds left in the third quarter, Kelly Schluederberg converted on a free-position attempt to put Florida back up 12 goals.
  • To start the final frame, Pavinelli and Eagan went back-to-back, putting Florida up 20-6 with 13:04 remaining in the game. Arizona State then outscored Florida 4-1 over the final 12 minutes, with the lone Florida goal coming from the stick of Maggie Corbo, but the Gators were able to secure the 21-10 victory.
