Webber Women: Warriors Drop Tight Matchup Against D-II Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. (April 1, 2022) – The Webber International University women’s lacrosse team traveled to Central, South Carolina to face NCAA Division-II Southern Wesleyan resulting in a tight 12-9 loss for the Warriors.

The Warriors (6-7 overall) were outshot by Southern Wesleyan (6-7) 38-26 in the game while both teams had nearly the same amount of turnovers and ground balls. Southern Wesleyan had the slight advantage in draw controls 13-11.

Southern Wesleyan would score the first goal less than a minute into the game. The Warriors would respond roughly two and a half minutes later through a man-up goal from Samantha Esher, assisted by Bryce Gerber. Southern Wesleyan would then go on a run, scoring four-straight goals over a five minute span to take a 5-1 lead. Webber scored the final goal of the first quarter after a solo man-up goal from Natalie Bartek would cut the deficit to three. The Warriors would score two goals in the second quarter just 33 seconds apart, first from Lauren Dombroski followed by Esher’s second of the game. Despite the two goals, Southern Wesleyan would score three times in the quarter to hold a 8-4 lead.

The Warriors would outscore Southern Wesleyan 2-1 in the third quarter to reduce the lead to 9-6 heading into the final quarter of play. The first goal would be scored by Kaitlyn Patterson and less than two minutes later, Ayame Macedo would score her first goal of the season. Gerber would score a hat-trick in the final quarter, however, Southern Wesleyan would do enough to hold off the comeback effort from the Warriors.

Gerber would lead the Warriors offensively with three goals and an assist for a total of four points. She was followed closely by Dombroski who tallied a goal and two assists in total. Esher finished with two goals while Natalie Baumgarten collected two assists. Adding to her goal, Bartek led the team with five ground balls and two caused turnovers on the defensive end. She was followed by Alexia Allen with four ground balls and two caused turnovers as well. Patterson led the team in draw controls with five while adding three ground balls. Hannah Register spent all 60 minutes in the cage for the Warriors, picking up 14 saves along the way.

Next up, the Warriors have just a one-day break before traveling to St. Andrews University for their final non-conference matchup of the season on Saturday, April 2, at 12 p.m.
