Over the period of the last 10 years the sport of lacrosse has become more and more popular in the state of Florida. Every year there is an increasing number of high schools that are adding lacrosse to their sports varsity programs for both boys and girls. With this growth of the sport there has been a great demand for coaches, lacrosse instructional clinics, as well as numerous colleges and universities in the state are conducting lacrosse camps. All these efforts are intended to further develop the instructional aspect of the sport starting from ages 8 all the way up to the high school. These clinics in the Florida area have been helping boys and girls reach their goal of becoming the best of the best in the State. Many of the camps focus on basic fundamentals, skill sets, and lacrosse strategy. Although many of the players who attend the camps gain lots of knowledge for their specific position. There is one special clinic that is given annually for goalies.

The Florida Youth Lacrosse Foundation (FYLF) has been putting on “Lacrosse Goalie Day” in south Florida for the past 10 years. Headed by Donald Goldstein, this instructional clinic that originally started as “Peak Goalie School” was later adopted by the FYLF to expand their support of the local community. Not only will the goalies gain insight by extremely high level lacrosse coaches and former lacrosse goalies such as Eric Haggarty [assistant coach at Endicott College, and goalie for the MLL Boston Cannons] and Steve Batchelor [Director of Lacrosse Operations at Harvard] but this clinic is open to all coaches free of charge. “Most coaches, unfamiliar with the basics of the goalie position, struggle with development this key and integral part of their team.” Goldstein says. “Local coaches that were friends of mine used to come to my Sunday goalie training sessions to learn to develop their own goaltenders.” This clinic is meant to build the knowledge of local coaches and help them teach the fundamentals of the position. “It’s our hope that this hands on experience will be carried back to further the goalie development at their programs.” This year not only will Goalie day in South Florida feature some of the top mens and women’s goalie coaches in the nation, but it will also feature men’s and women’s officials speaking to the kids on the rules of the game that specifically apply to goaltenders. We want them mentally as well as physically prepared to compete. Goalie day will be held Saturday, January 10th 2015 at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton from 10am-4pm.
