Please remember the legal notices from my Top 10 preview, they are still in effect for each of these articles ALL SEASON LONG. Particularly the pacifism point. Enjoy the rest!
Well, the second week is in the books and again a number of games have impacted movement in the Top 10! As did two rainouts as LHP-Ponte Vedra and Lake Brantley-Hagerty had to be rescheduled!
As you read through this please remember that the season is still young and that the early weeks will likely show a lot of movement as teams start to get really going. I tend to emphasize quality wins quite a bit and teams who lose early will not be as penalized in my mind. It is only my opinion at a particular point in time, so don’t get too upset if it takes time for me to notice your team’s breakout season! One thing to keep in mind when viewing these polls is that so many of the top teams are playing each other this year so don’t solely look at W-L records, particularly when teams play out-of-state powerhouses from hotbed areas.
Don’t forget to look for our Coaches Poll later in the week!
So, here is the new Top 10 Media Poll going into the week starting March 3rd!
#1 Jupiter
#2 Saint Andrew’s
#3 Lake Highland Prep
#4 Lake Brantley
#5 Boca Raton
#6 St. Thomas Aquinas
#7 Lake Mary
#8 Barron Collier
#9 Ponte Vedra
#10 Columbus Catholic
Also considered in the next tier: Tampa Jesuit, Pope John Paul, Boone, Benjamin, Vero Beach, Maclay
In this next tier Benjamin, Vero and Maclay need a quality win to get back into consideration for the Top 10. Tampa Jesuit is still undefeated but has a weak first half schedule, making it difficult to move up. PJP’s only loss is a road loss at Jupiter and they play Oxbridge Monday and SA Friday. They also came up with an impressive road win at Jensen Beach. Boone enters consideration with their road win over Hagerty.
Other teams that are undefeated but not yet tested enough to garner consideration are First Academy, Belen Jesuit, Pine Crest, Oxbridge, Saint Edwards and Gulf Coast. We will also be keeping an eye on many others as the schedule eventually separates the contenders and pretenders!
Jupiter retained the top spot the old fashioned way, they earned it with a 12-10 win over previous #2 Lake Highland and with the home win over PJP. Their schedule this week includes a road trip to dangerous Wellington and back to back home games against #5 Boca and #8 Barron Collier. A 3-0 week will solidify their ranking.
SA has ground out road wins against previous Top-10 Vero Beach and a tight home win Friday against Benjamin to climb one spot to #2. On tap this week? Only a road game against #5 Boca Raton followd by a road game to PJP before hosting Jupiter the next week!
LHP falls to #3 following the road loss to Jupiter. They travel to Hagerty and host Georgia power Lovett this week.
Lake Brantley remains #4 after a one game week and has a home date with surprising Boone this week
Boca Raton remains #5 after a grind it out win over local foe Spanish River and will be quite tested this week, playing SA, Jupiter and Ransom Everglades in 3 days. We’ll really know about them after this week!
STA has flown under the radar so far but a road win over Vero Beach was a quality one and they host Pine Crest and travel to Benjamin this week
Lake Mary has started impressively with an easy win over Bolles and a good win over Hagerty but doesn’t look to be challenged until a 3/14 road trip to Jupiter
Barron Collier ground out a 5-3 win over Gulliver Prep and travels to Jupiter on Friday so we will see if they deserve this ranking pretty quickly
Ponte Vedra earned the rise with a solid road win over Maclay, avenging last year’s regular season home loss. They face area foe Bolles this week and then the schedule eases up until a road trip to Jupiter later this month.
Columbus Catholic makes their first appearance in the Top 10 as it looks like this senior class has stepped up to replace last season’s cast that carried the team to their first Final 8 appearance. Their schedule is backloaded so it will hard to see them making more upward movement until the schedule toughens.
Thanks for reading and good luck to everyone!
