Lynn Lacrosse Set to Host First Game in Program History Monday
BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University history will be made on Monday, March 3, when the inaugural season of men’s lacrosse begins. The Fighting Knights host Wheeling Jesuit on the neighboring campus of Pope John Paul II High School for the first game in school history at 7 p.m. Lacrosse is the third sport expansion in the last two years and the first team sport expansion for Lynn University since softball in 1998.
Head Coach Brian Kingsbury has kept his game plan under wraps since arriving on Lynn’s campus last spring. With a big task at hand, Kingsbury has recruited players from all over the country to build the program from scratch.
Bobby Campbell Stadium will open March 30, when the Fighting Knights host Colorado Mesa. Construction on the state-of-the-art facility began on Kingsbury’s third day of work at Lynn and he often compares the stages of building a new program to building a stadium.
This year is the ground work, putting together a team that will set the precedent of lacrosse at Lynn with hopes of making a splash at the NCAA Division II level. Lynn is the first school in South Florida to have a NCAA program and is key in bringing the culture to the region.
With a squad of just 23 and no veteran players on the team, Kingsbury is looking for leaders to step up. Goalkeeper Taylor Ferrino will be starting in the cage for the Fighting Knights while key defenders will be Shaun McDonald and Chase Ostermann.
Offensively, the Fighting Knights look strong with freshman Brian Kiel and transfers Tyler Janvrin and Joey Bacarella. Chris D’Angelo will be the go-to face-off man for the Blue & White while Vincent Genovesi can also take face-offs as a versatile defender.
The first opponent in school history posted an 11-6 record last season and opens its 2014 campaign against the Blue & White. The Cardinals are in their first season with Kevin Dugan as head coach and have been picked fifth in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference. WJU returns All-ECAC Second Team attackman Brian Frank, who led the team in points in 2013, and All-ECAC Second Team junior attackman/midfielder Tyler Buchan. Last season the Cardinals averaged 39.6 shots per game and scored 221 total goals while conceding 8.71 goals per game.
2014 will be the first season that the Sunshine State Conference sponsors lacrosse as a sport with Lynn being the sixth school in the conference to have a program. Tampa was announced as the favorite to claim the first ever SCC lacrosse championship while Lynn, was picked to finish last.
