On Tuesday, February 13, 2017 Bartram Trail and Creekside Lacrosse programs honored Corey’s legacy and his mission by dedicating their game to the 1st Annual Corey Goode Cup Memorial game at Creekside.
A portion of the gate proceeds and concessions were donated to The Corey Project, which was established by his family to fulfill Corey’s mission.
With the game underway, Bartram Trail scored first but was quickly answered in the next minute by Parker Scott for the Knights. The face off game was managed very well by the Bears Ian Heggblod as the Knights circulated in all of their face off personnel to challenge him. In the second quarter, Bartram tied it up at 3-3.
The play of the game was in the 2nd quarter when Parker Scott picked up a ground ball at the midfield and after getting injured flipped the ball to teammate Tim Vanderlinde and limped off the field while his team went down and scored. That one play was the embodiment of who Corey Goode was as a player and spurred a big run by Creekside who was up at the half 10-4.
After the half, the Bartram Bears were completely motivated keeping possession of the ball through most of the third quarter. However, the pelting of numerous shots did not phase the Knights goalie, Glenn Mandel, who had 17 saves in the game.
In the fourth quarter, the Knights sealed the deal with Timmy Vanderlinde scoring his seventh goal of the Knights fourteen points. The final score was 14-9. Creekside walked away with the Corey Goode Cup and both teams got to share in something special, the beginning of a tradition to honor one of their own, Corey Goode.
Author’s Note: Sometimes things fall through the cracks that never should have. During my illness i missed this article that was sent in in mid-February. The story speaks for itself and we regret not seeing it and publishing it at the time. But this truly is better late than never . . .Corey Goode was about adventure. Corey attended Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns County until Creekside High School opened up in 2008. He played lacrosse for both programs and his father, David, is currently a local high school and youth lacrosse official. After Corey graduated Creekside and Florida State University in 2014, he traveled to Cambodia with Children With Hope for Development (CHD), an international school. Upon leaving his first mission trip, he was determined to return in August 2016 to teach at CHD and assist in fundraising efforts for badly needed facilities. Upon his return to Cambodia in August 2016, Corey was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident before he was able to complete his mission for facilities improvements for the Children With Hope for Development school.
