2014 FHSAA Season Preview! “The North” Bracket Districts 1&2

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
There are no bye’s this year in the road to the FHSAA State Championships.  With a total of 32 districts the brackets breakdown pretty straight forward.  So let’s take a look at the upcoming 2014 FHSAA Season here as we break down the four brackets. The North Bracket consists of Districts 1-8, below is a look at District 1 and District 2 District 1-
PV vs Leon 022
New head coach Steve Karoff will lead a senior heavy Leon HS this season
We think the Maclay School is poised to repeat as the District 1 Champs.  They have top shelf talent with Stephen Chase (A, 2015, committed to Notre Dame), Teddy Transou (D/LSM, 2015, committed to Duke), Andrew Killinger (M, 2014, committed to DIII Vassar College), Javier Masferrer (M, 2015), Andres Masferrer (D, 2014) Maclay will participate in the Moe’s Classic once again, playing Vero Beach. The team is also working closely with local businesses throughout the year to grow the sport in Tallahassee and increase the exposure for the game. Maclay is coming off their best season in school history, a 16-4 campaign ending in the regional finals to 3-time defending champion Ponte Vedra. Lawton Chiles will have their say with some talent of their own. Senior Dalton Hester is a solid left handed middie and senior goalie Ryan Kearney, who is headed to Mars Hill both look to have great senior seasons.  Carsten Steinmetz, senior attackman, has committed to Goucher and should do plenty of scoring this year. Gulf Breeze is now in this district and they are not your  typical first year team.   They may surprise quite a few folks.  Coach Jim Sparazza of Chiles says, “They care capable of beating any of us.”

This is the second year for Gulf Breeze High school to participate at the high school level . They are a very young team but they do have some talent on the field.  Including William “Chris” Beck at middie and handling some of the face off duties.  Beck has also played for Team Florida in 2013 and is being heavily recruited by DII and DIII programs.  Another player making waves is Jonathan Dorf, Jon last year was the FOGO and Long Stick Midi, this year he moves to Attack, but will share some of the face off duties with Beck.  A 2 year varsity starter, he played a year in Maryland before moving down to the Sunshine State.  He can also play defense if the call comes. Goalie Zach Mathews is rock solid in the crease, and will be counted upon to direct a young defense. Coach Dorf says, “Gulf Breeze looks forward to playing and competing in District One and with the addition of two new programs in the Escambia Area (Pensacola and Pensacola Catholic) it should be a great year for boys Lacrosse in the panhandle of Florida.” Leon High School will be looking for production from Sam Myhre, Galen Postma, Bennett Bradford on offense and Preston Wilson and Stone Luger Anchoring the Defense.  Leon is senior dominated team this year. New Head Coach, Steve Karoff, commented, “We are going to surprise some teams this year with our improved skill and knowledge of the game.” Lincoln is looking to rebound from a disappointing 1-12 season in 2013.  They have some athletes to help get the job done.  Seniors midfielders Jacob Gehres and Wyatt Schmookler have experience along with junior middie Zach Sespico.  Coach Mark Williams is looking for a big year from junior goalie Ryan Thomas. They have replaced virtually all of the attack and two defensemen.  The goal, as Williams put it, is to simply be more competitive this year. To do that they must be more consistent offensively and disciplined on defense. The Lincoln team is  traveling to Southwest Florida for the first time this year and they will be looking forward to playing teams from that area. District 2

Oak Hall is the clear favorite coming into the season. They are the defending district champions and are boasting twelve seniors on the roster.  Led by athletic lefty middie Tyler Baggett and lefty attackman Jake Kirschner.  We also expects production from Will Oliver and Luke Caputo on attack and middies Brad Pita  and Sam Mitchell.  On the defensive end of the field look for Cody Blair and  Chad Kennedy  in front of Miles Davis in the goal. Every District 2 coach we spoke with said to look our for Buchholz.  Coach Reed Reynolds left at the end of last season but new head coach Wayne “Coach Mac” Macuirzyski has stepped up and they Bobcats are looking to pick up right where they left off. They have a young sophomore middie who rang up 39 points last year as a freshman (27g, 12a) named Finn Swanson.  He will team up with junior attackman Jackson McKaign (28g, 10a) and Lindenwood University commit Max Troha (27 points) and junior Kyle Hunziker (22g, 10a) to present a very well rounded offense.

Senior Adam Millinoff handling FOGO duties and returning junior goalie Illie Tomlin in the net they should be tough at all aspects of the game. Trinity Catholic graduated twelve seniors of which, eight are either playing DII, D III or club lacrosse.  Braden Doyle is the top returner.  The senior LSM committed to Florida Southern. Also on the defenseive side is a David Tacetta, a solid third year starter as a junior. On the offensive side of the ball look for good production from Max Bianculli and Cade Casse. Eastside will bring a little swagger to the 2014 season after reaching the district playoffs for the first time last season.  Returning to the team are tri-captains midfielder Landon Rogers, goalie Grant Berg and attackman Jonathan Jacobs. Also returning is standout defenseman Will Robinson and 2012 leading scorer Charles Bouie. Although losing standouts Fen Bowen and Devonte Horne to graduation, Eastside will have more depth at all positions. Gainesville High School and PK Yonge round out District 2.
