MACON, Ga. – One game into the season and Pete DeLuca is already showing the kind of impact he can have this season as the Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse team goes for its first bid into the NCAA Tournament. On Saturday at Duke, the senior goalkeeper kept the Dolphins in the game with 16 saves against the No. 3 team in the nation, giving Jacksonville the chance for the upset. Though JU eventually fell, 16-10, a clear message was sent that this team can play with anyone in the nation.
In addition to his highlight-reel saves against the Blue Devils, DeLuca picked up three ground balls and kept Duke off the scoreboard for more than 13 minutes, allowing Jacksonville to open up a 3-0 lead. This is his third weekly award, having previously won MAAC Rookie of the Week once in 2011, and a MAAC Defensive Player of the Week award last season.
Jacksonville returns to the River City this weekend, opening up the Moe’s Southwest Grill Lacrosse Classic doubleheader against No. 5 Notre Dame on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. Following the conclusion of that contest, No. 14 Ohio State and UMass will battle at the fourth annual event. Tickets for the event are still available on Ticketmaster.com or at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena Box Office. Tickets can be purchased in person at the arena or by calling (904) 630-3900.
