WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –– Palm Beach Atlantic used a 5-1 fourth quarter to soar past Florida Atlantic on Wednesday night, grabbing a 12-9 win. The Sailfish, ranked No. 16 in Division 2, overcame an 8-7 deficit heading into the final frame. Senior Joey Bauer (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Florida State Univ.) led PBA in scoring with three goals and one assist. Palm Beach Atlantic started with over five minutes of continuous offense, part of a stretch where FAU was held scoreless for the first 10:26 of the game. Bauer opened the scoring unassisted at 11:04, followed by defenseman Anthony Curra (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) scoring at 4:51. Following a second and third quarter that saw the ‘Fish trailing 8-7 into the fourth, PBA used the aforementioned 5-1 scoring run to end the game, on goals from Curra, Bauer, Camden Baggs (Summerville, S.C./Ashley Ridge), Dan Wilkerson (Bedford, Mass./Bedford), and Thomas East (Mableton, Ga./Whitefield Academy). In a nearly identical fashion to the game’s opening, Palm Beach Atlantic held the FAU offense scoreless for the final 10:25. They were backstopped by six key fourth quarter saves by Drake Kessell (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown); he had sixteen overall. WELCOME TO THE SELC Wednesday night’s 12-9 win for Palm Beach Atlantic is their fifth straight win against the Owls. PBA is 5-0 all-time against FAU, dating back to their program inception in 2012. PBA and Florida Atlantic played their first game together as members of the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference. Prior to this season, the Owls were an independent, non-MCLA affiliated program. PLAYER OF THE GAME Anthony Curra lived up to his 2014 All-American billing, scoring two goals, assisting on another, and picking up nine ground balls. His six forced turnovers also led the team on Wednesday night. UNSUNG HERO OF THE GAME Sophomore Jordan Khani (St. Louis, Mo./Timpanogos) registered five ground balls for the Sailfish, playing a crucial role on faceoffs and utilizing his speed to help freshman Scotty Brown finish 16 for 22 on faceoffs against Florida Atlantic.
