
Ave Maria: #3 Davenport Tops #8 Gyrenes In AMU Home Opener

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria women’s lacrosse team began their home slate on Wednesday morning against third-ranked Davenport (Mich.) The Lady Gyrenes fell to the visiting Panthers 22-14.
Sarah Wade and Katelyn Sherman each had five goals for the Lady Gyrenes. Mackenzie Tourville had two goals while Georgia Miller and Diana Semegran each found the back of the net once for AMU. Tourville also finished with three assists and eight draw controls on the afternoon.
Brooke Knoll led the Panthers with six goals followed by Taylor Ries with five goals and Jessica Lemcke with four. Amber Livingston (3) and Hannah Bush (2) also netted multiple goals for Davenport. Bush also had four assists for Davenport while Knoll tallied three assists for nine point on the afternoon. Ryan Deuel had 11 draw controls for Davenport.
The Panthers came out firing and scored five of the game’s first six goals to take a 5-1 lead just over nine minutes into the game. Over the next several minutes, AMU began to settle in and cut the deficit to two, 6-4, after two goals by Wade and one by Miller.
Davenport scored six of the final eight goals in the opening 30 minutes to take a 13-7 lead into the half. Each team had one man-up goal in the first half.
After the Panthers scored the first two goals of the second half, AMU went on to score four of the next six to get within six, 17-11. Three straight goals by Davenport would put the game out of reach as the Panthers would go on to win 22-14.
Davenport held a 36-27 advantage on shots and a 23-15 edge in draw controls. AMU had 32 ground balls compared to 23 by Davenport and the Gyrenes turned the ball over 19 times compared to 24 by DU.
Bianca Ballarin took the loss in net for AMU. She made 10 saves while allowing 22 goals. Samantha Powers picked up the win, making three saves and allowing seven goals. She was relieved at the half by Alex Yates who made seven saves and allowed seven goals.
The Gyrenes return to action on Monday when they host Columbia (S.C.) for a 12 p.m. contest.
