JACKSONVILLE, Fla.— The Jacksonville women’s lacrosse team is off to their best start in program history following a 11-9 win over Marist on Friday at D.B. Milne Field. The Dolphins used a balanced scoring attack as eight different players scored in the game, including six during a 6-2 run to open the game.
“Our teamwork across the board was really effective today,” said Head Coach Mindy McCord. “When you have a multitude of players who can score, it is really hard for defenders to single out certain players.”
In the first thirteen minutes of play, six different players found the back of the net to give Jacksonville the 6-2 lead. Danielle Della Rocca led the group as she grabbed her 22nd goal of the season just a minute and half into the game.Hannah Wilcox and Jess Worcester followed with back-to-back scores as the Dolphins led 3-1.
After Marist pulled back within one, Jacksonville set off on a 3-0 run with scores from Kelsey Wiglesworth, Rachel Aus and Holly Ventimiglia to put the Dolphins at 6-2. An additional goal from Aus later in the half sent Jacksonville into the break leading 7-3.
Marist rallied back in the second half outscoring the Dolphins 6-4, cutting the score to 10-8 with just 4:31 remaining. But some key saves from goalkeeper Asia Moore and a Caitlin McMahon goal with 49 seconds remaining kept the Dolphins in control and helped seal the victory. The Dolphins held the Red Foxes to only six completed clears of the 13 attempted in the second half.
“One of our main goals is the ride and having the best team defense,” said coach McCord. “We met our goal by forcing turnovers on their offensive clear and putting lots of pressure on them to make mistakes. I am very happy the way our defensive transition game played today.”
Jacksonville returns to action on Sunday, March 22 they head off on a three-game road swing starting at Presbyterian. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
