CHARLES, Mo. – The upset-minded Moccasins lost a one-goal game in heart-breaking fashion to Lindenwood (Mo.) University in their first road game of the season Friday afternoon at the Harlen C. Hunter Stadium.
No. 6 Florida Southern battled back from a four-goal halftime deficit to tie the game twice inside the last two-and-a-half minutes. Sophomore Kendall Kerge (Edgewater, Md.) knotted the game at 8-8 with 47 seconds remaining, but Lindenwood junior Jordyn Constance netted the game-winner for the No. 3 Lions with only six ticks left on the clock.
The 9-8 loss ends FSC’s eight-game win streak, and at 9-2 on the season, both losses have come to top-three teams. The Mocs lost to No. 1 Adelphi, the defending Division II national champions, by only two goals on Feb. 24.
It wasn’t easy, but Lindenwood, a semifinalist from a year ago, remained undefeated at 6-0.
The Moccasin defense was up for the challenge, limiting the Lions to a season-low nine goals; Lindenwood averaged over 19 goals per game and a 13-goal margin of victory in its first five games of the season.
Despite earning her first loss of the season in the net, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ashley Seborowski (Annapolis, Md.) made a career-high 14 saves. Five of those saves came off of free position shots as Lindenwood converted only one of its 10 free position opportunities.
Junior Ashley Robertson (Ellicott City, Md.) gave the Mocs their only lead of the game with at the 24:30 mark of the first half with her first of a season-high three goals.
From there, the Lions scored four straight, the last two coming only 42 seconds apart, to pull ahead 4-1.
Senior Caitlin Chase (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) cut the Lions’ lead in half with a goal at 5:56, but they tacked on two more to carry a 6-2 advantage into the locker room at the break.
Robertson and senior midfielder Megan Asper (Parkton, Md.) fueled the near-comeback for the Mocs. Asper scored three of the first four goals in the second half. She finished a question mark dodge from the right wing for her second straight tally at 15:58. Robertson buried two straight goals of her own, both assisted by Chase, to draw the game even at 7-7 with 2:18 to go.
Lindenwood’s Amanda Schimpke, one of four Lions to score two goals, only needed 19 seconds to regain the lead. Asper, however, stripped the ball from Schimpke on the ensuing possession, allowing Kerge to tie the game at 8-all with 47 seconds to go.
The Lions, who dominated the draw 8-to-3 in the second half and won the last five of the game, gained possession again off the restart to allow Constance to score the winner with six seconds remaining.
Chase finished with four assists and five points, both game highs. Asper and Robertson each recorded a hat trick. Asper also added game highs with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior midfielder Lorianne Hoover (Annapolis, Md.) was held without a point for the first time since March 26, 2013, a span of 32 games.
Florida Southern’s road trip continues tomorrow, Saturday, March 21 with a doubleheader beginning with an 11 a.m. game at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill. The Mocs will then make the nearly one-hour trek back to St. Charles, Mo., to take on Adams State at 9 p.m. in a neutral site game, hosted by Lindenwood.
