Charlie Morrisette’s career day spurs FIT to victory
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (8-1) won the opening faceoff and never looked back in its win over UMass Boston (3-3) on Friday night at Palm Bay High School’s Pirate Stadium. The Panthers scored quickly and cruised by the Beacons 17-6.
FIT pushes its program record wins streak to six games after dropping its only game of the season to then No. 9 Mount Olive on March 2.
The Panthers received contributions from across the roster in the victory, as 10 different players accounted for the team’s 17 goals.
Sophomore Charlie Morrisette paced the barrage with an efficient three goals on just five shots. He also dished the rock for two assists, giving him a new individual game-high of five points.
Sophomore Tate Beason followed suit with two goals and two assists on just two shots, while senior Zach Wynne finished with one goal and two assists. Four other Panthers recorded two goals in the win.
“The biggest thing we can take away from this game is that we are 8-1,” stated head coach Ryan McAleavey. “This is the most wins we’ve had in a season. The guys fought hard but we made some mistakes. We’ve got a long way to go and we need to clean it up. Every time you win and you can identify your mistakes and how you can get better, it’s always a good situation. We know what we have to do moving forward. We’re going to keep fighting, keep making adjustments, and keep having fun.”
Junior Nick Wynne put Florida Tech on the board first off a great dodge down the alley and a shot that burned by UMass Boston goalie AJ Collette. Wynne followed up his tally with another shot on the run to put the Panthers up 2-0. Morrisette fired in his first goal of the game with 1:36 remaining in the first quarter to give FIT a three goal lead heading into the next stanza.
The Beacons opened the second quarter with a goal by Nick Tangerhlini to decrease the Panthers lead to 3-1. Florida Tech answered with a 6-1 run to head into halftime up 8-2.
Senior Brian Bacarella scored an unassisted man-up goal just 30 seconds into the second half to push FIT’s lead to seven, but the Beacons responded with two quick goals of their own to make it a 9-4 game. The Panthers answered again with a 5-0 run, including two each from junior Jason Terry and Beason.
Following consecutive goals by UMass Boston, Florida Tech closed the game with three unanswered scores, including sophomore Ben Abell’s first and second career goals.
The Panthers dominated the Beacons in several statistical categories, including shots (51-20), ground balls (45-18) and faceoffs (17-9).
Redshirt senior goalie Eric Biller totaled five saves in the victory and improved his record to 8-0 on the season.
Florida Tech remains at home for a matchup with tech rival MIT at 7 p.m. on Monday at Pirate Stadium. Live video, audio and stats will be available at FloridaTechSports.com/live.
