Bernhardts to Windermere Prep Highlight Numerous Coaching Changes in Central Florida this Summer

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
In the biggest coaching news of the summer, the Bernhardt brothers have taken on the job of building a lacrosse program at Windermere Prep.  Jake and Jesse Bernhardt, who graduated from The University of Maryland after stellar carreers, have spent the summer playing in the MLL.   Jake played for the Ohio Machine and Jesse was taken by the Chesapeake Bayhawks 4th Overall in the 2013 Collegiate Draft.  The Lake Brantley Alumni will work together to turnaround the 5-7 program which did not qualify for the district play offs last season. Reed Reynolds has left Buchholz and took over the head coaching duties at Bishop Moore Catholic which was vacated by Craig Cook. Reynolds received his Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from UF in May 2012 and has worked in the UF Weight Room for the past two years as a Strength & Conditioning Assistant for Women’s Lacrosse, Women’s Soccer, Gymnastics, and Football.  “Bishop Moore gives me the opportunity to move back to my home town and work in a larger job market in my career field of Coaching, both Strength & Conditioning and Lacrosse.” Coach Reynolds is understandably proud of what his team accomplished at  Buchholz, “They have a strong team, that I’m sure will continue to improve and lacrosse teams in Gainesville will soon be able to compete on a state-wide level.” His goals for the  2014 season are to return Bishop Moore to its winning tradition and have a successful season. Tony Williams has agreed to launch a lacrosse program at Monte Verde Academy in Lake County. Tony is currently an NCAA & FHSAA Men’s Lacrosse Official.  He is also the director of the Outlaws lacrosse club.  Tony was formerly the Head Coach at West Orange High School and was a Captain at Cortland State. Jeff Reedy left Seminole High School and they have not yet hired a new coach.  Interested coaches should send a resume to Mike Powers at mike_powers@scps.k12.fl.us. Dr. Matt Ort is not returning to Olympia and we have not been informed of a new hire as of yet. Charlie Battaglini has accepted the job as head coach at Dr. Phillips after the departure of Matthew Provencher. Battaglini grew up in Annapolis, Maryland where he started playing lacrosse.  After high school he joined the Marine Corps in 2004, where he served for 5 years, doing tours in Iraq.  Charlie left the Marine Corps in 2009 and moved to Orlando to finish his degree.  In 2011 he was hired as an assistant coach at Dr Phillips,  finally taking over this upcoming year. “We won our first District title in 2011 and hope to build on the fairly new program at Dr. Phillips with future success.”  Battaglini said, “We can not accomplish anything without first working together.” Mike Armstrong has left Wekiva.  Wekiva is currently looking for a new coach. Ben Hjelle took the Head Coach position at Edgewater after spending the 2013 season as Edgewater’s offensive coordinator. Hjelle has held previous head coaching  jobs at York School (California) and Clayton High School (Missouri), where he was the state Coach of the Year runner-up in 2011 after achieving the highest ranking for a public school in the state. Hjelle works for both College Park Lacrosse and Lacrosse Club of Orlando in the offseason. Keith Marks has left Winter Springs HS and they have not yet named a replacement.  Coaches interested in the position should contact A.D. Steven J. Luppert at steven_luppert@scps.k12.fl.us.
