Bishop Moore Does The Impossible….Stops Vero Beach

Whether the number is 145 or 146 (we think it’s 146) it’s big.  That’s the winning streak the Vero Beach women’s program has against Florida opponents. It’s over.  Bishop Moore has done the impossible. Bishop Moore was 10-7 last season.  But last season is in the rear view mirror.  The Hornets have a new coach, a new attitude, and a new direction for their program. Kelly Blystone has been with the Bishop Moore program for three years.  Until this season she was with the JV team.  “I’ve known a lot of these girls growing up and my daughter is on the team. We’ve been working together and changing the program since the summer.” She believes there is more than just stick skills that make this group special.   “This group of girls is an amazing group of young women. Not just skill and Lax IQ but mental toughness.”  And it’s not just these girls that she sees coming together to create a new direction for this program.  “We are very balanced from family, the school administration, our campus ministry, and the alumni.  Everyone is very supportive.” The mental toughness was a huge part of this historic win.  “These girls are not going to be outworked. They knew they had an opportunity in front of them and they took it.” From the beginning of this one Bishop Moore had the intensity.  They held onto a 4-2 lead at the halftime break. Blystone thought her team could find an advantage at the draw.  Sophomore Cate Curry had a small advantage in the first half and Blystone made the decision to use her exclusively for the draw.  It worked out in the second half as the Hornets went on an 8 goal run to begin the half with Curry going 7 for 8 on the draws. Another sophomore, Sophia Villalonga, came up big between the pipes with 10 saves for the Hornets.  This was the first Varsity game played by Villalonga and Curry.  In fact, it was the first varsity game for quite a few of the girls.  A team with only two seniors, the roster consists of 14 juniors, 4 sophomores and a freshman, Blystone is trying to build a program that will last. “Moving forward, we do a lot of things besides just play lacrosse.  The girls a very close unit.  We  went on a retreat together at the beginning of the year and we just  talk a lot and have a lot of fun together.  We are trying to keep focused on the program and what the program’s goals are.”   “The program is completely different than the 10-7 effort.  We have built a program, not a team that is just going out to play games.  I have full faith and confidence that we can go out an win games.” The young team did lean on one of it’s seniors , Sarah Larkin.  She came up big with 5 goals and an assist.  Abby Spalding, a junior, added four goals and two assists.  Jeanne Kachris is the teams emotional leader.  “She leads by example and just will not stop,” said Blystone.  Kachris scored a hat trick. “The defense played unbelievable.  Great communication, won the ground balls.” Things won’t get easier for Bishop Moore just yet.  After beating the defending state champs they face the state championship runners up next.  Ponte Vedra (3-0) hosts the Hornets on February 19th.
