(Men’s Lacrosse) – On a cool Saturday night in Melbourne, No. 13 Florida Tech started the game hot, outscoring North Greenville 8-1 in the first half en route to a 10-5 victory over the Crusaders at Florida Tech Panther Stadium. The FIT midfield provided the offense in this one. Led by two goals and one assist from senior Jason Terry, the Panther middies combined to score eight of the team’s 10 goals to go along with two assists. Cody Martin and Austen Zugelter each found the back of the net twice in the game while four other Panthers recorded one tally apiece. Usually a sharp shooter for the Crimson and Gray, Charlie Morrisette finished with career-high three assists in the contest and Brian Bacarella added two more assists to his team’s effort. Terry got the ball rolling with his rocket down the alley to give FIT a 1-0 lead. One minute later Morrisette found an open Brett Pohlmeyer for the second tally of the game. Bacarella then connected with Zugelter for straight goals, and Nick Brown scored off the ensuing faceoff to give the Panthers a 5-0 edge at the end of the first. Terry hit the twine and drew the late foul at the 14:19 mark of the second quarter to push the lead to six. The 6-foot-8 slinger then found freshman Justin Wittfelt on the man-up try to make it a 7-0 game. North Greenville finally got on the board with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half on an unassisted tally by Sean Lemay.  Martin closed the first half scoring with his bouncer off a feed from Morrisette to increase FIT’s lead to 8-1 at the break. The Martin-Morrisette connection worked again in the third, giving the Panthers an eight goal advantage with 8:33 left in the quarter. An interference call against Florida Tech gave Drew Wassenaar the time he needed to blast a shot by Justin Ruiz and make it 9-2, however Tyler Covey answered less than a minute later to bring the lead back to eight. Penalties slowed FIT following Covey’s tally, as the Panther offense was unable to keep much of a rhythm going in the third and fourth quarters. NGU went on to score the final three goals of the game, the last one coming off a man-up score by Chris Carpenter with 13:13 still on the clock in the fourth. Travis Wunder continued his dominance at the X, winning 13-of-15 faceoffs to go along with a game-high seven groundballs. Addison Abramson ran the wings on draws while also stalking the NGU offensive players all over the field, finishing with a team-high three caused turnovers and one groundball. Mike Cherry was also active on close defense, picking up five groundballs in addition to forcing a turnover. For NGU, Wassenaar finished with two goals and three other Crusaders notched one apiece. Sky Dupree snagged a team-high five groundballs and Zach Randolph and Alex Proly each caused three turnovers. In goal for the Panthers, Ruiz picked up his second win of the season, recording five saves in the process. His Crusader counterpart, Matthew Sandoval, blocked 11 shots in the game. FIT ended with a healthy margin in shots in the game, outshooting NGU 42-16. The Panthers only allowed four total shots in the first half alone. Florida Tech also won the groundball battle 40-27 and finished a perfect 15-of-15 on clear attempts. Florida Tech has a 13-day layoff before it welcomes Lenoir-Rhyne to Florida Tech Panther Stadium on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. ET. The Panthers defeated the 15th-ranked Bears last season 13-12 in Hickory, North Carolina.
