Boca Raton Prevails In Double OT Thriller

FLN would like to start by sending big kudos to Guy Van Arsdale, Tom West and Moe’s for another successful weekend of lacrosse at EverBank Field. For the high school players and their families, the package of watching college games on Sunday followed by playing in an NFL stadium on Monday was about as good as it gets. Let’s hope this fine event continues for years to come.
In one of the best match-ups of the day, Christian Mauro buried an overtime winner (shown above) to give the Boca Raton Bobcats a hard fought road win against one of the best teams in the state, the Ponte Vedra Sharks, a highly ranked team in studentsports.com‘s Fab 50 poll. The scoreboard photo shows the tie score late in the second overtime immediately after Christian took his shot.
As the score implies, the story of this game was excellent defense. The first overtime had nary a goal (I guess that one gets a “duh”) and the winner was scored with 16.6 seconds left in the second. Both goalies, Colin Peaks of Ponte Vedra (whose older brother Conor is Delaware’s starting goalie) and Matt Digney of Boca Raton (who counts among his coaches former French national team goalie Bryan Lejeune) made impressive saves throughout. Pardon this writer as he takes a second to talk about Matt Digney. Not much has been written about Matt so far. He has played for years on school and club teams in South Florida working on his craft. Last year, Matt was the back-up to Delaware freshman Nick “Fuzzy” Martin and this year you will hear about him all season. Most “overnight” success stories are anything but, and the same could be said about Matt. For the record, Matt saved twelve of nineteen against a talented Ponte Vedra team with a number of D1 commits. Both Matt and Colin are terrific, skilled kids who can go as far in the game as they desire.
Boca’s close defenders of Harrison Rodormer, Cole Garner and Jordan Aman are a seasoned, quality contingent and part of a great year for defenders statewide.
FLN believes there will be a number of single digit scores in 2014, and this writer agrees with Lee Roggenburg‘s assertion that there will be a number of surprises in the FHSAA play-offs. As for Lee’s other predictions, let’s just say they encourage healthy debate.
But wait, there’s more…Boca might be coined this year’s “cardiac kids” as Zach Frey fed his brother Kyle who scored with a second remaining to tie the game in regulation. Zach had two goals of his own. Parker Giarratana led Boca’s scoring with two and one, Ryan Clinton tallied one and one and Nick McCabe completed the Bobcat’s scoring with one goal. For Ponte Vedra, a perennial final four team which could win the state title this year, fine performances were registered by Jacksonville commit RJ Garcia, junior Eric Applegate and Army commit Miles Silva.
As we get more information, we will update this article. The Florida season is off to a great start!
