Boone Nips Timber Creek in OT!

By Tom Hopkins I believe it was Yogi Berra that said “It’s deja vu all over again.” This is what came to mind Wednesday evening as Boone beat Timber Creek in OT by a score of 14-13 in a hotly contested district contest. Last years regular season game, played at Boone, ended 11-10 Boone in OT. Much like last year, TC went up early and held the lead until late in the game, only to succumb to some unfortunate penalties and poor transition defense. Timber Creek led 5-4 at the end of the 1st, after going up 3-0 on some quick goals by Sean Johnson (4G,1A), Trey Grenga (1G) and Jake Sousa (2G, 1A). The second followed suit and ended with the score Timber Creek 8-6. Sean Johnson added another 2 goals in the 2nd along with Nate Gillan getting on the board. Timber Creek and Boone both suffered some ill-timed penalties that put them in man down situations and both teams gave up goals during these locked in penalties. The third was a well-played one for both teams. Timber Creek playing steady defense and the Boone goalie Tyler Davidson making multiple saves in difficult situations to keep Boone close. Boone’s Griffen Broeker dominated at the face- off and allowed Boone to control the pace, but good defense by Braden Cassata, Brandon Brinkmeier and Tyler Gunning kept Timber Creek ahead going into the 4th by a score of 11-8. That’s when the wheels came off of the wagon for Timber Creek and seemed to go Boone’s way on every aspect of the game. Broeker’s dominance at the face off allowed Boone to assert itself with some uncontested fast breaks that amounted to a 5-0 Boone run midway through the 4th. Luke Magley orchestrated many of the breaks with some well timed dodges setting up the Boone scores. Timber Creek scored late to draw within 1goal with a little over a minute to go. EJ Wheeler scored on a Nate Gillan assist to set up the OT. In OT, Boone won the face off and scored after a quick timeout. I am sure this seemed like a bad dream for the TCHS faithful as the game ended 14-13 Boone on top. Timber Creek continues the season at East River on Friday evening before traveling to Lake Brantley Tuesday the 15th. Timber Creek record drops to 7-3 on the year.  Boone moves to 5-3 on the season and travels to University High School on Friday
