Breaking: Monday Morning Storms Damage Benjamin and Dwyer High School Fields

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
Florida was hit by a storm front that was part of the system that spawned numerous tornadoes throughout the Southeast. When I woke up this morning and put on the local news out of West Palm Beach the TV crew was on the scene at WT Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens and they spoke of the likelihood a tornado had touched down and caused enough damage so that school was closed today. But knowing the proximity of Dwyer to Benjamin (they are basically right across the street from each other) my first thought was that Benjamin would likely have had damage too.  Sure enough, the Upper School was also closed today and a video taken at the school shows that is certainly the case. The damage to the Benjamin School football field, where the lacrosse team is set to take the field on February 10th to open the season, is extensive, putting the home schedule at risk of massive change. Here is a scene of the field:     Those who are familiar with the facility know that there is supposed to be stands there, as this picture is centered on about the 30-yard line.  Other pictures show (this is taken from a video) the press box still standing as well as the steps on either side of the stands, but NOTHING ELSE.  The entire stands have been destroyed.  There are also issues with the turf itself that will necessitate a lot of repairs.  One of the light towers was knocked over and the scoreboard is also gone.     Thankfully, the storm did not hit during school hours and no one was hurt.  The entire lacrosse community wish the best for Coach Rye and Benjamin, and Coach Heide and Dwyer, and their teams.  We will bring you updates in the near future.
