Breaking News: FAU Elevates Men’s Program To MCLA Status!

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
Thanks to Chris Fantaccione, FAU Lacrosse Program Coordinator/Coach for sending us the exciting news!   The Florida Atlantic University men’s lacrosse club is pleased to announce that, as a result of its attendance at the fall meeting of the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference at Georgia Tech University on Sunday, September 21st, it has been admitted for membership in the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) of the Men’s College Lacrosse Association (MCLA), and will begin conference/league play in the spring of 2015. The club will compete in the Division II South East Region along with the clubs from Palm Beach Atlantic University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Georgia Southern University, and Savannah College of Art & Design. Other opponents for the spring of 2015 will include the University of Florida, the University of South Florida, the University of Miami, and Auburn University. Per club president Ray Williams, this change from independent club to member of the forty member conference/two hundred member league, will help increase awareness of men’s lacrosse both on the FAU campuses and in the national lacrosse community. Our membership has tripled over the past three years as more students have become aware that FAU offers the major they want as well as the opportunity to continue their lacrosse playing careers beyond high school. Head Coach Mike Galvin stated that it will also ensure that the club is able to routinely schedule games with the top teams from the ten states and the District of Columbia that compose the SELC as well as to attract some of the top teams from around the country that are members of the other nine MCLA conferences to come to Palm Beach county to play league games. The FAU squad will be involved in a much more challenging and Propecia competitive level of play thanks to the talented and well coached opponents that it will now face.   fau-5-fiu-0   Per Coach Chris Fantaccione, Assistant Coach – Operations Director for the FAU men’s and women’s lacrosse clubs, “this is part of the master plan to have both the men’s and women’s lacrosse clubs at FAU become members of their respective regional conferences and national leagues. The FAU women’s lacrosse club joined the Southeastern Women’s Lacrosse League (SWLL) & Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA) last fall and played a full league schedule in the spring of 2014, so it made sense for the men’s club to follow suit for the upcoming season.” Fantaccione also noted that with neighboring MCLA/SELC member club Palm Beach Atlantic University preparing over the next couple of years to field a team that will join nearby Lynn University as a member of the Sunshine State Conference in Division II of the NCAA, the time was right for Florida Atlantic University men’s lacrosse to become a part of the  MCLA/SELC to fill a potential void, with the goal of establishing itself, along with University of Miami and Florida Gulf Coast University, as a strong representative of the south Florida college club lacrosse.   FAU-12   All agreed that with a men’s professional lacrosse team, the Florida Launch having played its inaugural season home games at FAU Stadium this past summer, combined with the area’s men’s and women’s collegiate lacrosse teams, middle school boys and girls lacrosse teams of A D Henderson University School  playing games at Henderson Field, and summer lacrosse camps and travel team practices taking place there as well, the Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton campus is quickly becoming a “hub” for lacrosse activity in Palm Beach County and South Florida.
