Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
The Columbus Explorers, led by Dade County coach of the year Jim Delang, returned to their form of last year with a resounding win over the athletes from Palm Beach Central in a 17-5 home rout. The experienced, senior-laden Explorers were dominant at both ends of the field with a tenacious defense led by seniors Omar Shabazz, Danny Gomez and goalkeeper Michael Davide with 5 saves and Robert Penichet who also assisted in goal with 4 saves. Shabazz had 2 goals, one of which was the outstanding goal of the game, with a dodging length of the field drive and precision shot. Nick Velikopolski also had a great play with a defensive steal and a series of fakes and moves through several defenders to set up the offense. The offense continued where they left off last season with a sharp passing game and well-orchestrated attack led by seniors Grant Nordlund and Steven Hernandez who led all scorers with 4 goals and 3 assists. Grant Nordlund and Alec Carreras also had stellar games with each adding 3 goals and 3 assists. The mainstay of this game was the exceptional play at face off by Jake Quigley and Nick Quintairos where the Explorers won over 75% of the battles allowing the offensive a variety of opportunities. The wealth on the Columbus offense was spread out amongst 15 players showing depth and skill at all positions and a deep rotation which performed well and received valuable game time experience. The Broncos were led by a relentless attack by Nick Griffin, the offensive power of Palm Beach Central, who had 5 points with 3 goals and 2 assists with Nick Ferro adding a goal and an assist and Brennan King who also added a goal.
