Despite six goals from Derner, Dolphins fall 22-13 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University ran into a buzz saw Tuesday and despite six goals by sophomore Morgan Derner, the Dolphins saw their 12-game home win streak snapped by Cornell, 22-13, at D.B. Milne Field. The Big Red, ranked 16th nationally in one lacrosse poll, put the pressure on early by scoring the first six goals of the game and each time JU (6-2) threatened, Cornell responded with consecutive scoring outbursts of three, three and five goals. Derner scored JU’s first two goals, but Cornell’s (6-1) Olivia Knotts (four goals for the game) and Lauren Halpern responded to put the visitors up 9-2. Derner then scored her third and fourth goals sandwiching a goal by teammate Jess Worcester and soon thereafter sophomore attacker Ali Hoffman and sophomore Brittney Orashen teamed up with Orashen scoring two goals, both assisted by Hoffman, to pull within four at 11-7. But, Cornell’s Cacki Helmer hit a critical goal with three seconds to play in the first half giving the Big Red a 12-7 halftime lead. “Going into the second half we had a margin that we could have executed some goals off but we have to secure the draw control possession and we got outworked in terms of securing some of those possessions,” JU coach Mindy McCord said. “We had some good chemistry going at times and at other times our fundamentals really broke down and it cost us.” The Dolphins’ Jen Cosgrove scored on the initial draw control of the second half, 11 seconds into it, and JU trailed 12-8. Cornell then scored three goals and followed that up with a five goal barrage and a 20-9 lead. McCord thought her team had a chance when it got to 12-8. “The one thing I’ve been impressed with this team on is they don’t focus on the score,” she said. “They focus on one possession at a time and they know they can be in a game and that you can score a lot of goals in very few minutes.” Kayleigh Hynes, Melissa Jaworski and Nikki Erdely all added goals for JU and Hoffman wound up with three assists and Orashen had three ground balls and three draw controls to her credit. Derner’s goals, on an economical eight shots, give her 14 in the last three games. JU sophomore Kaitlin Stewart was shut out from scoring ending her school record 12-game goal scoring streak. “Respectfully, we came up against a strong, well-coached opponent who executed its fundamentals,” McCord said. “They were smarter than us today. I thought we had the athleticism to compete with this team but at the end of the day it’s how many balls you put in the net and their offense did a really great job of execution the entire game.” The Dolphins are off until Tuesday when they face Fresno at home at 4 p.m.
