LAKELAND – Florida Southern earned its third victory over a ranked opponent this season when the No. 7 Moccasins doubled up No. 14 Queens (N.C.), 16-8, Tuesday night at Bryant Stadium.
With the win, the Mocs extended their win streak to six straight games since losing by two goals to No. 1 Adelphi on Feb. 24 and improved to 7-1 on the season. The Royals fell to 4-3.
The two teams were locked in a defensive battle in the first half of play. The Mocs held a 5-1 lead at the break. The lone goal allowed to Queens was the fewest FSC has allowed in any half this season.
Both teams committed a dozen turnovers in the first 30 minutes, nine caused by the Mocs and seven by the Royals. In addition, the Mocs were unable to convert four of their 14 clear attempts in the first half.
Queens goalkeeper Danielle Horoschak threw the ball away twice in the first two minutes as she attempted to transition the ball up the field after making a save. FSC’s third possession was the charm as senior Megan Asper (Parkton, Md.) found the back of the net for the first score of the game at 27:59.
“It just seemed like both teams were making really poor decisions, especially in the transition,” said head coach Kara Reber. “There were so many unforced errors in transition for both teams, but thought defensively we did awesome job in the first half. We really did a great job crashing and getting some caused turnovers. Just transition-wise, we struggled.”
The Mocs only led 1-0 for 11:31 until a run of three goals in under five minutes allowed them to pull ahead 4-0.
Queens was held scoreless for nearly 17 minutes, but Kelly Dowd ended the drought to make it a three-goal difference at the 13:04 mark in the opening half.
Asper earned the first-half hat trick with 12:28 to go in the period to make it 5-1.
After a low-scoring first half, the Mocs and Royals combined for 12 goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. FSC netted six of the first seven out of the locker room to take an insurmountable lead.
Sophomore Kendall Kerge (Edgewater, Md.) scored back-to-back goals only 23 seconds apart to open a run of five unanswered goals for the Mocs. Senior Lorianne Hoover (Annapolis, Md.) added her first of the game only 21 seconds later. She won the ensuing draw control and nearly went the distance, but was foul as she cut to the net from the left wing. Hoover deposited the ball in the net on the free-position shot to make it 9-2.
Hoover scored another free-position goal to complete her hat trick and give the Mocs their largest lead of the game, 13-3, at the 22:29 mark in the second half.
The Royals went on a brief run with three scores on a span of 1:38 to reduce the deficit to 13-6. It appeared they had scored a fourth straight goal at 14:23, but junior it was called off because of a foul assessed to defender Nicole Bellini (Winter Park, Fla.) before the shot. Queens’ Bridgette Larranaga dished the ball to Caity Hamilton, who was camped alone on the doorstep of the crease off the free-position restart. Redshirt freshman goalie Ashley Seborowski (Annapolis, Md.) slide to her right to cover the post for one of her season-high 11 saves.
“She made an error there at one point but then stepped up and started making some important saves when they were trying for their comeback,” said Reber of Seborowski, who is now 5-0 in the net.
Asper led the Mocs with four goals and Hoover recorded a game-high six points with three goals and three assists. Kerge had a season-high three goals.
Florida Southern will look to continue its win streak when it hosts Seton Hill on Saturday, March 14 at 1 p.m. at Bryant Stadium.
