TAMPA, Fla. – The back line of Marty Heyn, Larry Gress, Nate Tembi, and Andrew Failla held No. 9 Florida Southern to only one goal in the first half as the No. 6 University of Tampa won the inaugural Sunshine State Conference tournament title 11-6 Saturday night at Pepin Stadium. With the win the Spartans finish their regular season with a 15-2 record, while Florida Southern fell to 11-4.
Tampa took advantage of a Moccasins penalty as Conor Whipple found Kyle Hemrick for a man-up goal two minutes into the game. Tampa responded as Bobby Calhoun and Smith each netted an unassisted goal to extend the Spartans lead to 6-3. On the Spartans next possession Jake Rooney picked up the rebound off his own shot and put it into the back of the cage to give Tampa a 7-3 advantage after three quarters of play.
The two teams traded goals twice to start the fourth quarter. Minutes later Brain Patton netted an unassisted goal to extend Tampa’s lead to 10-5. Two minutes later Riley Piper found Rooney in transition for a goal to give the Spartans an 11-5 lead with 4:35 remaining in the final period.
