MACON, Ga. – For the fourth-straight season, Jacksonville has been picked to win the Atlantic Sun (A-Sun) Conference women’s lacrosse crown in a vote of the league’s nine head coaches, the conference office announced Friday afternoon.
Two Dolphin juniors also swept the conference’s top individual preseason awards, as attacker Danielle Della Rocca was voted Player of the Year, and Erika Brager was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year. In all, four Jacksonville student-athletes were named to the Preseason All A-Sun Team, and two Dolphins were named to the Watch List.
The Dolphins earned 80 points and eight of nine first-place votes in the 2016 A-Sun Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Coach Mindy McCord has built Jacksonville into a juggernaut in the A-Sun since the program joined the league in 2013, as the Dolphins are a perfect 16-0 in conference play during that time and have won three-straight regular-season and tournament titles. Jacksonville is seeking its fourth-straight trip to the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship.
Della Rocca, a 2015 first team All A-Sun pick and 2014 All A-Sun freshmen team choice, led the league in points (84) and goals (55) as a sophomore and ranked 10th and 22nd nationally in each respective category. The Mount Sinai, N.Y., product was second in the A-Sun and 31st in the country with 29 assists. Della Rocca spearheaded a Dolphin offensive attack that led the A-Sun and country in assists per game (7.8) and scoring margin (8.3) and led the A-Sun while ranking second nationally in scoring offense per game (15.6).
Della Rocca is tied for first in program history with six man up goals and ranks sixth all-time in goals (79) and assists (36) and seventh in shots on goal (124) and ninth in free-position goals (16).
Brager, a 2015 second team All A-Sun choice and Baltimore, Md., native, was sixth in the A-Sun and 45th nationally a year ago in ground balls per game (2.4) to go along with two assists, eight draw controls and 18 caused turnovers.
Joining Della Rocca and Brager on the Preseason All A-Sun Team are senior defender Sam Bauer and junior midfielder Hannah Wilcox. Bauer, from Cambridge, Md., racked up 28 ground balls, 20 draw controls and 22 caused turnovers in 2015. Wilcox, who hails from McMurray, Pa., totaled 19 goals, six assists, 24 ground balls, 29 draw controls and 13 caused turnovers in her sophomore campaign.
Jacksonville junior defender Kristin Ridenour and sophomore midfielder Ashtyn Hiron were named to the Preseason All A-Sun Watch List. Ridenour, a 2014 All A-Sun freshmen team selection who comes from Alpharetta, Ga., ended 2015 with one goal, two assists, 27 ground balls, 11 draw controls and 15 caused turnovers. Hiron, from Perth Western, Australia, recorded 17 goals, five assists, 18 ground balls, 17 draw controls and seven caused turnovers in her first collegiate season. During the Summer 2015, Hiron was named to the U19 All-World Team while competing for Australia in the FILA World Cup after finishing the tournament with 13 goals, seven assists, nine draw controls and seven ground balls.
Wilcox and Ridenour along with redshirt senior attacker Taylor McCord were recently voted as captains for the 2016 squad.
The Dolphins, coming off a 17-3 campaign and 7-0 mark in the A-Sun, open the season in 14 days by hosting Notre Dame, which reached the 2015 Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship second round, on ESPN3. Jacksonville’s first seven games take place on campus at D.B. Milne Field.
