Van Arsdale Excited for 2016 JU Campaign

From JUDolphins.com JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville fifth-year head coach Guy Van Arsdale has been working his craft at the collegiate level for nearly three decades, but his enthusiasm for the 2016 Dolphins’ squad and season can hardly be contained. “In this first two and a half weeks of practice, I don’t know if I’ve had more fun,” Van Arsdale said. “These kids are awesome. They’re awesome kids.” Van Arsdale knows how to sculpt a winning tradition and is intending to make waves this season in the team’s third year in the Southern Conference (SoCon). Prior to the SoCon, Van Arsdale led the Dolphins to eight wins overall in 2013, including a 5-1 record in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contests, to tie for the regular-season crown in only the program’s fourth season of existence. And, before arriving in the River City, he guided Colorado College to two NCAA Division III Championships in 2011 and 2012. Van Arsdale is a household name on the Division I circuit, having been an assistant coach at Notre Dame and Penn State. Van Arsdale’s 159 all-time wins as a head coach are the most among active NCAA coaches with at least five years as a four-year college head coach but fewer than five years at the Division I level. Van Arsdale is looking to extend that long-term success in 2016 with a new cast of characters, as the Dolphins imported 14 new student-athletes, including 12 true freshmen, to their 40-man roster. Like Van Arsdale, the new Dolphins are used to winning, as the class has combined for three state championships and eight All-America honors. Dakota RohlinChase Miller and Ray Banister, however, are not new to the First Coast scene. The three Dolphin seniors have combined to appear in 95 games in three previous seasons and lead a nine-man senior class looking to make waves in their final season donning the Green and White. Rohlin tallied 14 goals and eight assists in 2015, while Miller had nine goals and one assist. Three Dolphin seniors – Rohlin, midfielder Derek Andrake, defender Ray Banister – were selected as captains for the 2016 campaign.
Less than nine days remain until the season-opener against Vermont at D.B. Milne Field which is followed by the sixth-annual Moe’s Southwest Grill Lacrosse Classic, set for Feb. 13-15, sponsored by Lax.com and Brumos Automotive. Seven home games highlight the Dolphins’ schedule, including a Feb. 27 date with No. 3/3 Duke, which has won three out of the last six, including two of the last three, NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse national titles.
