Draft Effect Already in Place; Launch Make 5 Roster Moves For Tonight

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
The effect of the Sunday MLL Draft has already altered significantly the 25-man roster for the Launch game against the NY Lizards tonight. For those who are not familiar with the MLL player rules, there are a certain number of slots allocated to the active roster, which numbers 25, and other categories like drafted players that are not yet activated on to the roster or the practice squad.  There is a practice squad but those players are available for claiming by other teams, an injured list (PUP-physically unable to perform) and then the ultimate list, which is the 19-man roster that will actually dress for the game, and that list is chosen around midday of the game, usually after the walk-through that morning. Of the 12 players drafted Sunday, FIVE of them have been added to the 25-man roster . . . Dylan Molloy, Nick Mariano, Sergio Salcido, Alec Tullet and Benny Pugh are now part of the 25-man roster and we will see who will dress from them. To make room for the new roster members, the Launch have moved Jovan Miller to the practice squad and released Jimmy Dailey, Greg Melaugh, Austin Geisler and Evan Connell.  The biggest surprise among those was Dailey, as he put up 7 goals and 4 assists in the five games he played in, good for second on the team.  That might well indicate Steve Pontrello is back from injury tonight and that Molloy will definitely dress.  The release of Geisler also likely means Pugh will dress as backup to Kaut tonight.  Tullet will likely slot in to Connell’s spot and the Salcido/Mariano tandem is also likely to make their debuts at midfield.  Mariano also has plenty of college experience at attack and the team might well play him some there.  In addition, Pontrello played midfield for UNC until his senior year when they moved him to attack, so there’s a lot of options available. Liam Byrnes is still finishing out his NLL season with Georgia and that might take another three weeks if the finals go to 3 games. It’s also likely that in the coming weeks we will see other draftees like Jarrod Neumann and Tim Muller (probably needs a week to rest from the long NCAA championship run).  Ryan Drenner and Mike Tagliaferri will likely get a look at some point in the season too. Tune in to LSN tonight to see how well the new roster performs!
