Dwyer Edges Saint John Paul II 12-11 In Tense Fourth Quarter

Those who have read my columns over the years know how much I enjoy discovering someone who might be known in the lacrosse community but not in the general viewing population. Before last night’s game I was talking to one of the local coaches about some things and I mentioned I was going to this game last night and that coach told me to really pay attention to Dwyer’s LSM Danny Pagano, who is a senior commit to Air Force. I asked if he should be in the mix for All American and his said he certainly should be up for consideration.
Heck of a tip.
Fans with memories of a couple of years ago know that I was a big fan of Micheal Diener of Pine Crest, who has moved on to Hofstra, where he started 10 games last season as a sophomore on defense. I was constantly amazed at how well Michael handled the stick and he was used on the left wing a lot on the EMO, using the long pole to pot a number of goals.
Last night, LSM Danny Pagano scored SIX GOALS . . . three on fast breaks and three on shooting from the wing position.
Three of those goals were scored in 90 seconds of the fourth quarter, a natural hat trick as the hockey term goes, to overcome a 9-8 deficit with less than 8 minutes to go and that was enough to propel Dwyer to the road win.
I don’t know if I will ever see something like this again . . . and coaches, don’t overlook him.
The game itself needed Keith Jackson . . . for my younger readers he was THE college football announcer for many years on commentary. Full of excitement. An old fashioned slobbernocker (no wrestling fans, Jim Ross did not invent that one . . . ) Besides Pagano’s brilliance there were two other standout performances . . . by SJP’s (good thing I wasn’t fined for each use of Pope last night) Ryan McMahon with his own 5 goals and by Dwyer goalie Sean Thompson with 19 saves. Kudos also to Dwyer’s faceoff play in the fourth quarter, where I had them 8 for 8. Dwyer jumped out to a 4-1 lead before SJP tied it up in the 2nd. From there it was back and forth , no more than a two-goal lead for either team until the late Dwyer run, but SJP made a last minute rally and took the game down to the last shot . . . a pleasant change from most of my early games.
Or as Keith would say . . . “Whoa Nellie”
As for the game results, first a little mea culpa. I had some trouble with the numbers last night so if I missed an assist or have the wrong goal scorer, please feel free to write in . . . but not too often . . .
Dwyer opened the scoring at 11:00 as Stone Flanery scored unassisted off a right alley dodge and beat 1st half starter Zach Czulada between the legs. SJP came back to tie at 6:54 as Patrick Brower dodged in from the left wing and his right hand shot far the low right corner. Dwyer than ran off three goals 69 seconds late in the first to take a 4-1 lead after one. Pagano finished off a fast break from about 15 yards out, hitting the low left corner. Then Sean Haymes found a cutting Alex Cabrera from behind the net and Cabrera finished from in front. Finally, Pagano took advantage of a faceoff win to pretty much replicate his first goal from up top.
At 7:42 SJP cut into the lead as McMahon circled behind the net and worked out to the middle, firing low with the right hand. 1:31 later Shawn Gildea cut the lead to one as he curled from behind the net to the right side and his left hand shot hit the top corner. At 4:45 it was tied up as Brower worked his way from behind the net to left GLE and dodged to the crease to finish. Cabrera got the lead back for Dwyer 30 seconds later as his left alley dodge found the low right corner. And at 1:57 Flanery sent Dwyer to the half with a 6-4 lead as he beat a double team down the right alley, finding the low left corner. Thompson made 10 saves in the first half to help Dwyer overcome a large shot deficit.
SJP wasted no time coming out in the third and at 10:36 it was 6-5 as Chris Castellon took advantage of a rebound off a pipe to step down from the left wing and his bullet found the top left corner. SJP tied it at 6 at 9:12 as Reegan Leen dodged from the right wing to the middle and his left hand bounce shot kicked high on the left, just under the crossbar. Possessions went back and forth until Dwyer scored twice in 12 seconds to go back up 8-6. At 3:17 Brooks English scored off a crease feed from Haymes, who beat his defender along right GLE. And then Pagano again took advantage of a faceoff win, going down the right alley before his bounce shot found the net. But with 57 seconds left in the 3rd McMahon cut the lead to one as he was able to step down from the top middle and his low shot made it 8-7 after three.
The game was tied up at 10:47 as McMahon fired home from straight away on a fast break from about ten yards out and SJP took their only lead of the game at 8:41 as McMahon finished his own natural hat trick with a right alley run, hitting the low short side this time.
Cue Danny Pagano time . . .
At 7:40 Pagano found a loose ball on the left wing and fired into the low far corner . . . Then at 6:20, on EMO, his left wing rip hit the top right corner . . . and just 10 seconds later Cabrera found him in the middle and Pagano’s shot found the low left side and it was 11-9 Dwyer. Just 13 seconds later Flanery finsihed his own hat trick, taking Cabrera’s top middle feed on teh right side and his laser found the high short side for 12-9.
Dwyer attempted to sit on the lead but a number of turnovers led to SJP opportunities but they were not able to chip into the lead until late in the game. Finally, at 1:02, McMahon hit the top short side from the right alley to make it a 2-goal game. Then with 38 seconds left, after another turnover, Chris Johnson face-dodged the middle and his low left shot set up the final push. Dwyer again won the faceoff and called time out to attempt to run out the clock. Trapped near midfield Dwyer turned it over and SJP was able to get a good look but the shot sailed wide and Dwyer won the backup race and the final agonizing seconds for SJP were spent watching the arching clearing pass from Thompson.
A great game to watch. The type of game a newcomer to the sport would enjoy.
The Florida lacrosse season is fully underway.
For local fans . . . SA hosts Benjamin at 1:00 today . . . bring a friend!
SJP is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to district rival American Heritage-Boca in a key matchup to determining playoff slots while Dwyer also plays Tuesday at home against South Fork, before facing Jupiter and Benjamin back to back in their tough district games.
