Palm Beach Central Shows Offensive Prowess in 18-6 Win Over Atlantic

Readers of the site have become familiar with the nascent program being built by legendary player Doug Shanahan down at St. Brendan and in a way that has overshadowed another such program at Atlantic in Delray Beach being built by Kevin Finneran.  Both highly accomplished and necessarily patient this year.  Building a high school program from scratch is no picnic no matter how much your school supports you.  When I spoke to Kevin about coming out to the game his first response was ‘Go Big Red’, but I showed my magnanimity . . . and since Kevin is still bitter over missing out on his ninth championship ring I could afford to be . . . and trundled over to Atlantic to see Kevin’s team go to battle with another of my Long Island favorite’s . . . Bill Allen and Palm Beach Central.  I’ve seen Bill’s team before and one thing I knew I would see would be some goals. This is the type of game that means something different to both teams.  For a young program there’s a desire to see how far you’ve come and these matchups are the ones you look forward to to see how you’ve progressed, since Atlantic is playing this year as an Independent.  Next year it gets interesting to see which district they are assigned to.  For a PBC it’s more about trying to take care of business after absorbing a tough 2-goal loss at home to Spanish River earlier this week.  Where this type of game tends to get played out is when the more experienced team has a few college level players that can take over a high school game and the emerging program just can’t match up with them and that’s how the game tends to be won. And that’s pretty much exactly how the game played out.  PBC is very strong up front and Austin Cavallo can pretty much play with anyone.  Cavallo, Kevin Hagerty and Matt Liermann combined for 13 goals and 9 assists in the game and that was pretty much the entire story of the game.  PBC jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first period with Cavallo and Hagerty scoring all 7 goals as Cavallo’s speed and stickwork were too much for the inexperienced Atlantic defense.  A 5-3 second put the lead up to 12-3 at the half and PBC cruised the rest of the way as Coach Allen was able to play his entire bench.  Atlantic competed the whole game, which is what Coach Finneran would hope for and Paul Lipinski and Nick Petry was able to pot two goals each.  Atlantic definitely showed some bright spots; they were able to dominate the faceoff circle and that was an effort issue.  Dieuson Millien and Delouis Dantinor were front and center in that battle.  And 29 roster players for Atlantic . . . not bad for the start-up program! One encouraging thing to me was that the crowd was bigger than I thought I might see, showing that there is certainly interest at what is a football school.  Let’s hope that one day Kevin gets that elusive ninth ring . . . and that he is disappointed next Saturday . . .   PBC Team Shot 2016_opt   There was no working scoreboard so I don’t have the times of the goals so we have to go with recap mode:   1st Quarter PBC scored all 7 goals Cavallo off a turnover and cutting to the middle from the left wing and a right hand low shot Fast break leading to Cavallo cutting to the middle from the right wing and going low far side with the left hand Off the next faceoff  from the left wing as Liermann finding Cavallo cutting to the middle Liermann finding Hagerty cutting down the left alley from behind the net Cavallo face dodging from right GLE to the middle Hagerty from Cavallo as he was cutting down the left side Hagerty from Liermann off the break as he stepped down from the top left wing   2nd Quarter Atlantic gets on the board as Lipinski picks off a clearing pass and his right hand bullet goes between the goalie’s legs Liermann finding Hagerty on a back door cut from right GLE for 8-1 Cavallo scooping up a ground ball and working his way from the middle to the wing and to the crease Liermann moving in from left wing and ripping near the goal Petry answers for Atlantic on a right alley dodge Lipinski backing that up as his isolation led to bounce shot to the high left corner Juan Carrero taking Cavallo’s right wing feed in the middle Clark Whiddon finishing the first half at 12-3 with a right alley power move and bounce shot   3rd Quarter Atlantic makes it 12-4 off the faceoff as Jared Walker takes Lipniski’s feed off the crease for the open shot PBC then puts the game away with four goals Tyler Thomasson down the right alley Thomasson on the EMO after Hagerty found him up top from the left wing Hagerty cutting down the middle and Liermann finding him from the left wing Liermann on EMO working the left GLE and crease from Hagerty’s feed Atlantic fought back with two to end the period Petry taking Kai Cheslack’s left wing feed in the middle Alex Yarnall dodging from the top right wing to the middle   4th Quarter PBC finished with the last two goals as Joe Iannone dodged from the right wing to the middle and Cavallo finishing on the EMO   A solid trip of offensive talent that has played together for awhile and knew how to play off each other against a defense that is new to the experience . . . pretty much sums it up fairly easily.   PBC is back in action on Tuesday as they visit Palm Beach Gardens and Atlantic travels on Tuesday to John I.
