FIT Women: Offense Unloads in Rout of Ave Maria

(Women’s Lacrosse) – Carrying the momentum from its season opening win, Florida Tech made quick work of Ave Maria in their exhibition Saturday, scoring 12 first half goals en route to a 20-1 victory. Eight different Panthers hit the twine in the contest. Allie Modica paced the group with five goals to go along with one assist. Sara Grenier finished with four goals and two assists while Caroline Dunleavy added three goals and two assists. Mary Gormley notched a hat trick to go along with an assist and Sarah Kapinos tallied one goal and two assists. A number of Panthers recorded their first career points in the victory as well. Leah Dunn scored two goals and Cristina Marani and Danielle Thomas each found the back of the net once against the Gyrenes. Modica opened up the scoring with two straight in a 30 seconds span to put FIT ahead 2-0 at the 23:54 mark of the first. Gormley, Grenier and Dunleavy all scored to increase the advantage to 5-0. Dunn notched both of her goals in succession with the second one giving the Panthers a 9-0 edge. Dunleavy’s second of the half increased FIT’s lead to 12-0 as the teams went into the break. Ave Maria finally got on the board 3:10 into the second half to make it a 12-1 contest. Dunleavy finished off her hat trick 40 seconds later, igniting an 8-0 run by the Panthers to close the game. Including last season’s victory over Ave Maria, FIT has now outscored the Gyrenes 38-1 in two contests. Overall Florida Tech out shot AMU 37-6, including a 31-4 edge in shots on goal. The Gyrenes did not get their first attempt on cage until the waning moments of the first half. FIT collected more draw controls, 14-7, and won the battle for groundballs 23-7 with Sam Schiano, Gormley and Modica each snagging four.
