FHSAA Season Preview – District 31

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
District 31 Gulliver Prep moves over to this district and Riviera Prep moves up to varsity status to join three members of last year’s District 32.  Gulliver starts the season as the prohibitive favorite and they now have an interesting first year dilemma in that a likely run to the district title will be distinctly easier, but less likely to prepare them for the FHSAA playoffs.  Last year’s district winner Miami-Palmetto earned their crown with a 19-18 2OT win in one of last year’s best story lines, as the OT winner was scored by the younger brother of the losing team’s coach!  You can read that on the site by searching Miami-Palmetto or Coral Reef.   LNN_Florida_Classic_Logo_Final-01_opt   Gulliver Prep finished 14-5 last season with all of their losses to Top 20 competition.  Against them is the fact that they did not beat another Top 20 team.  The schedule this year is very similar so it will be interesting to see if this squad can take the next step.  A solid Top 15 season in the state can become a Top 10 one with a few more wins. Head Coach Jim Piggot brings back a number of the players and will rely on: Trevor Pelletier (Manhattan), CJ Hassan (Colby), Walker Gautier (committing shortly) and long pole Dominic Benitez, with junior goalie Lucas Rego (Wooster OH). Coach Piggot also noted: “We are the team to beat in our district and in Miami it’s between Columbus, Belen and us.  We are trying to stay focused on being the best we can be. Execution with excellence and being disciplined while causing chaos on the field.”   CJ Hassan   Miami-Palmetto fought to a 9-6 record before bowing to Gulliver in the FHSAA first round.  They struggled on both sides of the ball against their tougher competitors but showed some solid defensive numbers against the rest.  They did play a close game before losing to Belen 5-3 and it seems that if they can find a way to score more against the better teams they can add a victory or two. Head Coach Robert Murray will have to rely on a young group of players due to an off-season incident that will cause a number of players to miss this year.   Miami Palmetto 2015 #4   Coral Reef was a team I got to cover last year and they finished with an 8-6 record in Coach Brian Cowen’s season at the helm and that included a nice upset of Belen in OT.  A similar refrain is the need to cut down on goals against versus the better teams. Coach Joel Lemus takes over for Brian Cowen.   Coral Reef 2015 #1   Miami Killian improved to 4-6 from last year’s 1-6 but will struggle with the tougher district matchups.  Like so many others goals against needs to come down to start to move up the ladder.  The out of district schedule is light and the question will be if the school will be willing to step up in tandem with the other schools that are improving. Coach Benjamin Young enters his third season and has scheduled 15 games this year, so the trend is going the right way.   Riviera Prep enters its’ third season as a program and has yet to win a game, going 0-4 and 0-6 in the 2 years.  The schedule only shows 7 games currently so you have to question why they are stepping up from independent at this point in time.  There’s really little to say at this time about the program as the school’s web site does not list anything about the sport.   Back to main preview page
