District 7
Matanzas made the leap last year from a pretty good 8-6 team in 2014 to a 12-5 District Championship program. Head Coach Jeffrey Goren’s team grew up last year and was able to avenge a mid-season loss to St. Augustine in the District Championship game by pulling off a one goal victory. They could be even better this season. With 13 seniors on the roster and some good newcomers they are the District 7 team to watch.
Gunner Parson is one of the better uncommitted seniors in North Florida and Coach Goren is looking for a big year from him. Jake Cohill (Mount Olive) is a player to watch on attack along with junior Andrew McIntire. McIntire had a strong sophomore campaign with the pirates in 2015 and looks to be a problem for opposing defenses. Defensivley look for newcomer Michael Forte and Matt Gutierrez (goalie) to lead a strong unit. Freshman Maximus Schalit is a young player who will make an impact on that defensive unit as well. Storm Schalit is a tough two way midfielder.
St. Augustine made it to the District Championship game last year dropping that one goal heart breaker to Matanzas.
Father Lopez made strides in 2015. In the biggest turn around in the state Head Coach Andrew Hock took an 0-17 team and taught his guys how to win. It paid off with an exciting 9-6 season. This year the team is out to prove that the 2015 season was not a fluke. “We want to build and do something great here in Volusia County,” commented Hock. He is not only looking to build the future but thinks his current group of seniors can put together another good season. Connor Nyborg was the offensive leader of team last season. Don’t look for him to come off the field much this year either. He is a two sport athlete who knows how to put his hockey experience to work on the field. He can draw the double or even triple teams, stay calm, and find the open man. That open man is often senior middie Daniel Anderson. The super quick athlete is tough and can shoot.
Defensively, look for senior Angelo Scotto to pick up where he left off last year. Scotto really came on strong toward the middle of last season and earned a starting spot. He should have a great year. He plays in front of the team leader, Nick Rando. Rando is solid in the goal and brings the intangible element of true leadership to the Green Waves.
Pedro Menendez has the goalie, and two middies returning from their district championship team from two years ago. Coach Argitas is looking at a team relative newcomers to the game with most of the players in the first or second year of the sport. Menendez lost experienced seniors at key positions, including three big contributors from last year district championship team. Defensemen Zack Prince (Mount Olive) and Daniel Chambers (Catawba) along with middie Nick Argitis (St. Leo) who holds every scoring record at Pedro and was four year starter.
This year the Falcons should get some good contributions from sophomore attackmen Alex Ruiz and Logan Miller. In the midfield look for junior middie Dylan Smith. Junior goalie Zack Strickland returns and as the ability keep Menendez in the game.
