FIT carries spectacular month of play into road test with Lynn
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (9-2, 1-1 SSC) looks to continue its impressive play as it heads into a tough matchup with Sunshine State Conference opponent Lynn University (7-3, 1-0 SSC) on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Panthers have been on quite a hot streak recently, winning seven of their last nine contests, including two victories over top 15 opponents. FIT was on a tear during the month of March, averaging 13.67 goals per game and outscoring its opponents 123-82 in the team’s nine games. Senior Zach Wynne paced the Panthers last month with 36 points on 17 goals and 19 assists, and junior Jason Terry led the team with 19 goals.
On the year, sophomore faceoff specialist Travis Wunder has been dominant in the X controlling almost 62 percent of his draws while senior Jordan Carlock directs an aggressive Panthers’ defense, with his nation leading 40 caused turnovers.
The team’s performance has guided Florida Tech to its best record in program history and a school record seven consecutive wins leading up to the Panthers’ previous contest against Rollins.
Before their game against Rollins on Saturday night, the Panthers were ranked No. 12 in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Division II Poll and No. 13 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division II Poll. Following the 9-6 loss to the Tars, FIT has fallen to No. 14 in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine ranking and No. 15 in the USILA ranking.
If anyone was to just look at the stats of the game, they would believe that the Panthers won the matchup handily. FIT dominated the most pertinent statistical categories, including shots (45-26), ground balls (42-17), faceoffs (14-5) and caused turnovers (10-5).
On the field, the game was very different. Despite Florida Tech’s advantage in the stats battle, Rollins escaped with the victory due to the incredible performance of its goalkeeper, Jake Hogan. The Tars’ freshman goalie was an absolute wall in the cage, making 19 saves in only his second career start.
The Panthers will look to return to winning ways against an upstart Lynn team that has been impressive in only its second season in program history. The Fighting Knights have already won six more games than they did all of last season.
Lynn comes into Friday’s matchup just off a 16-4 defeat at the hands of No. 11 Mount Olive on Saturday, snapping the Fighting Knights’ four-game win streak. The Fighting Knights had an early 3-2 lead but the Trojans dominated the rest of the way, outscoring Lynn 14-1 the final three quarters. Junior Anthony Rainone scored all four of Lynn’s goals in the game, while sophomore Taylor Ferrino recorded 11 saves and seven ground balls.
Rainone leads the Fighting Knights with 38 goals and 48 points and freshman Austin Jerhoff has a team-leading 15 assists.
In the teams’ only other matchup, Florida Tech routed Lynn 19-5 on April 5, 2014.
