FT Women: Panthers Set for Final Non-Conference Showdown with Indians

FIT tries to make it two in a row when it takes on Catawba
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (5-5) travels to Salisbury, North Carolina to face Catawba College (7-5) on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET at Kirkland Field.
The Panthers have been impressive so far in their inaugural season, going .500 in their first 10 games. FIT is ranked 12th in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 14.9 goals per game. The team has reached the 20 goal mark in three of its wins this season. Florida Tech is also third in the nation with 29.60 ground balls per game and sixth with 11.6 caused turnovers per game.
Sophomore Allie Modica paces the Panthers’ offense with 53 points on 37 goals and 16 assists, while freshman Sara Grenier leads the team with 38 goals.
FIT hit the road last weekend for a regional matchup with Young Harris on Saturday. The Panthers routed the Mountain Lions 20-8 and in doing so ended a three-game losing streak dating back to Florida Tech’s 18-4 loss to No. 4 New Haven on March 16.
Modica scored a season-high seven goals in the victory over Young Harris to go along with two assists. Grenier finished with four goals and three assists, while fellow freshman Caroline Dunleavy added four goals and one assist.
Florida Tech’s defense was stellar against Young Harris, holding the Mountain Lions to a total of 14 shots and forcing them into 25 turnovers. The Panthers won the draw control battle 16-14, including five each by freshman Mary Gormley and Modica.
Young Harris scored the first two goals of the contest, before FIT answered with four of the next five goals. The Panthers and Mountain Lions exchanged the next six goals before sophomore Heather Roache scored with just over three minutes remaining in the first half to give Florida Tech an 8-6 lead heading into halftime.
FIT racked up four consecutive goals to open the second half before Young Harris scored two of the next three goals. The Panthers fired in the final seven goals of the game to walk away with their first road victory of the season. Florida Tech goes for two in a row in its matchup against Catawba.
The Catawba Indians are coming off two straight wins over Coker College on March 28 and Chowan University on March 30. Catawba will face Pfeiffer University on April 2 before its matchup with Florida Tech.
Freshman Caroline Beggs leads the Indians with 33 goals and 13 assists and junior Alyssa Corace is second on the team with 28 goals and 12 assists
